Job Description
To build more high-performing schools, we need leaders committed to the most urgent and exciting work of our time. At Uncommon Schools, our Deans of Curriculum & Instruction (DCIs) are school leaders focused on supporting teachers and instructional leaders to deliver the most rigorous and joyful academic experience for our students that leads to exceptional academic gains. DCIs play a central role in the success of their school and work closely with their Principal and fellow DCIs across Uncommon to drive student achievement and teacher development. DCIs' responsibilities include:

Data-Driven Instruction
  • Conduct deep analysis of data to lead effective analysis meetings based on student work samples;
  • Build and implement action plans, materials, and systems to address data, including facilitating Interim Assessment (IA) scoring and norming, developing pre- and post-analysis of IAs, and supporting Instructional Leaders (ILs);
  • Monitor progress against assessment cycle benchmarks;
  • Facilitate assessment cycles, ensuring quality and scheduling;
  • Support regional and network data analysis and response systems.
Feedback and Teacher Development
  • Conduct daily observations and provide feedback to support teacher and instructional leader growth;
  • Support mid-year reviews and professional development planning;
  • Lead staff meetings and coach ILs on instructional goals;
  • Oversee school-specific data response curriculum;
  • Partner with the Principal on staff professional development and onboarding.
Whole School Culture
  • Support planning and leading school-wide initiatives;
  • Manage academic systems like office hours and grade books;
  • Model culture and rigor techniques.
Curriculum and Instruction Initiatives
  • Plan and facilitate network or regional professional development;
  • Support instructional initiatives related to student achievement.
Mission-Alignment
  • Demonstrate commitment to improving students’ lives and academic success;
  • Support school needs and participate in inspections and walkthroughs;
  • Collaborate with various staff to support students’ academic and socio-emotional development.
Qualifications
  • Ability to plan and lead effective teacher professional development;
  • Strong teaching skills and proficiency in lesson planning;
  • People management skills and systems-based thinking;
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and implement Uncommon’s instructional leadership tenets.
Required Experience
  • 3+ years of teaching with evidence of student growth;
  • Instructional coaching experience;
  • Strong content knowledge across multiple grades or subjects;
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
