James Irwin Charter Middle School is currently seeking a full-time English teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. The successful candidate will have a 10-period day with four English classes, one study hall and one elective period. An English teacher at JICMS has a multi-faceted job: he or she is responsible for weekly lesson plans for the Literature and Grammar/Writing curricula, independently teaching several sections of classes, and assessing student growth and progress through a variety of standards in the areas of Core Knowledge, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing. The literature selection includes novels, plays, poetry, and nonfiction at all grade levels from the pre-approved curriculum list.
The teacher is also required to keep regular contact with parents/guardians of students who are not mastering the material, and teachers are encouraged to support students individually as much as possible.
In the English department, teachers must assign and grade homework and update all grades in Infinite Campus by a set deadline each week. (Students receive weekly grade slips.)
Teachers collaboratively create lesson plans weekly and post these plans for approval from the Lead Teacher.
Teachers at JICMS also aim for being data-oriented and aware of student performance in general, especially on standardized tests. Teachers do this through weekly grade summaries submitted to their Lead Teacher.
All JICMS teachers also share several extra responsibilities including monitoring car line, study halls, occasionally chaperoning school events, proctoring study halls, and sponsoring one of our ten Houses. These responsibilities will be assigned during pre-service training and maintained throughout the academic year.
