Job Summary

Carbon Valley Academy K-8 is searching for a 6-7-8 ELA/Humanities teacher experienced in teaching the grade level standards. The successful candidate will motivate students toward an enthusiasm for literacy and critical thinking. We are looking for a teacher who understands the developmental and social-emotional needs of young adolescents (grades 6-8). An approachable, engaging, organized, sensitive, and disciplined teacher will be most successful in this position.

The primary focus will be developing and maintaining a strong student-teacher connection inside and outside the classroom. Our goal is to attract and retain a colleague who engages thoroughly with our learning community and participates in the larger life of the school (e.g., team lead, club sponsor). A sense of humor is also appreciated. CVA K-8 is a Chromebook 1:1 school that uses technology to support student achievement. You will teach one section (80 min) of ELA/Humanities for each grade level (6-8), teach an elective for one trimester, and co-teach with our math teacher in another trimester. You will have 1-2 planning periods of 50 minutes depending on the trimester, and a 40-minute lunch.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and voicing concerns, encouraging student voice.
  • Design, develop, and deliver lessons and curricula that adhere to national and state standards.
  • Create assessments, provide feedback, and communicate progress to parents and teachers.
  • Establish classroom rules and social contracts, ensuring students understand expectations.
  • Assist students in developing skills in English/Language arts, philosophy, and the arts.
  • Prepare and deliver quality learning experiences via the Workshop Model.
  • Conduct parent/teacher conferences twice a year and communicate regularly with families.
  • Provide resources and interventions for struggling students.
  • Handle administrative tasks like grading and record-keeping promptly.
  • Participate in after-school community activities and events.
  • Collaborate with team members and accept coaching from administrators and trainers.
  • Prepare lesson plans and show evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and enforce classroom rules.
  • Serve as a resource through coaching, co-teaching, and modeling best practices.
Other Duties
  • Attend professional development, PLC meetings, staff meetings, and other activities.
  • Implement professional learning in instruction and contribute to school vision.
  • Participate in school events, clubs, and extracurricular activities.
  • Create engaging displays and learning centers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or administrators.

Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities. The listed duties are representative; other similar duties may be assigned.

Educational Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in English or related field with certification to teach (or working towards it). Social Studies credit or focus is preferred but not required. Experience with the Workshop Model instruction is desired. Candidates should demonstrate leadership, professionalism, dedication, time management, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
