SUMMARY: To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.

  • Teaches District approved curriculum.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and --in harmony with the goals--establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Diagnoses the learning problems of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of the principal.
  • Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  • Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  • Works effectively with all members of the staff.
  • Keep current in discipline and teaching techniques.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: BA degree in area of major study.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Massachusetts Teaching Certificate, in area of study required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, teachers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.

    Position Overview
    The Middle School EL Teacher provides English language development instruction and academic support to English learners in accordance with Massachusetts requirements and district programming. The teacher works collaboratively with content-area teachers, specialists, administrators, and families to support students' development of academic English and meaningful access to grade-level curriculum
  • Essential Responsibilities
    Provide direct English language development instruction to English learners based on students' English proficiency levels and identified language-development needs.
    Plan and deliver instruction aligned with the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework and Massachusetts curriculum standards, as appropriate.
    Provide instruction through appropriate service-delivery models, which may include dedicated ESL instruction, small-group instruction, push-in support, and co-teaching.
    Collaborate with general education teachers to support English learners' access to rigorous, grade-level content.
    Assist teachers in identifying and implementing appropriate language objectives, scaffolds, accommodations, and instructional strategies for English learners.
    Use English language proficiency data, classroom performance, assessments, and other evidence to identify student strengths, needs, and progress.
    Monitor students' English language development and academic progress and adjust instruction and supports accordingly.
    Administer and support required English language proficiency assessments, including ACCESS for ELLs, in accordance with state and district procedures.
    Maintain required records and documentation related to English learner identification, programming, services, assessment, and progress.
    Participate in student support, grade-level, department, and other collaborative meetings as appropriate.
    Collaborate with counselors, special educators, interventionists, and other staff to help distinguish language-development needs from other academic or learning needs.
    Communicate with families regarding student progress, programming, and school supports using appropriate translation and interpretation resources.
    Support newly enrolled multilingual students in their transition to the school and its academic and social expectations.
    Promote an inclusive environment that recognizes students' home languages, cultures, identities, and experiences as assets.
    Provide consultation, resources, and professional learning to colleagues regarding effective practices for supporting English learners.
    Participate in district and school professional learning and improvement initiatives.
    Perform other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position.
  • Required Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree.
    Valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education educator license - English as a Second Language (ESL), 5–12
    Knowledge of second-language acquisition and effective English language development instruction.
    Knowledge of Massachusetts requirements for educating English learners.
    Ability to use student language-proficiency and academic data to plan instruction and monitor progress.
    Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills.
    Ability to work effectively with students, families, educators, and other members of a multidisciplinary school team.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    Experience teaching English learners at the middle school level.
    Familiarity with WIDA standards and ACCESS for ELLs.
    Experience providing dedicated ESL instruction and working within co-teaching and push-in models.
    Experience collaborating with content-area teachers to integrate language development with grade-level academic instruction.
    Experience supporting multilingual students with varying levels of English proficiency.
    Knowledge of culturally and linguistically responsive instructional practices.
  • At least 5 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
  • Master degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
