Job summary

Sanders Unified School District seeks a qualified school counselor to support students’ social, emotional, and educational development. You will assist with enrollment, ELL placement, and records management, while coordinating transitions between grades and supporting family involvement.

The role requires a Master's level credential in counseling or educational psychology, plus relevant teaching credentials; bilingual Navajo/English is preferred. A district pay scale will apply.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling or educational psychology required or preferred by the district.
  • 3+ years of successful school experience preferred; able to work with counseling staff.
  • ADE teaching credential and counseling endorsement required.
  • Good computer operating skills and strong communication/collaboration abilities.
  • Familiarity with Navajo tradition and culture; experience with Navajo students preferred.
  • Experience developing, documenting and evaluating educational programs; bilingual Navajo/English preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in registration of new students and orient them to the school.
  • Place new ELL students (PHLOTE) and refer for testing (AZELLA); manage records.
  • Prepare the master schedule; update transcripts and add grades each semester.
  • Conduct transition support for grades moving 5th–6th and 8th–9th.
  • Assist in course selection and scheduling; maintain confidential student records.
  • Help prevent student dropouts and support student career planning.
  • Organize and oversee intervention groups and assist RTI monitoring.
  • Provide guidance to families and participate in district activities.

Job description

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A Master's Degree, educational counseling or educational Psychology. At least three (3) years of successful working experience in a school setting is preferred, able to work well with other counseling staff. 2. ADE State Teacher Certification Teaching credential and counseling endorsement.

  4. Experience working with Navajo Students preferred
  5. Experience Developing, Documenting and Evaluating Educational Programs Preferably bilingual, Navajo/English.
  6. Ability to satisfactorily pass a background check, including positive references from previous immediate supervisors.

TERMS OF Ten (11) months per year

EMPLOYMENT:

SALARY: Salary is to be determined by district pay scale and Board.

POSITION GOAL: To assist students to overcome social and emotional problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans, that hold promise for personal fulfillment as mature men and women.

DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists in the registration of new students and orients them to
  2. Responsible for placement of new ELL students (using PHLOTE), referral for testing (AZELLA) and reclassification of current ELL students including all record keeping for permanent files.
  3. Prepare the Master Schedule for each school year. Updates Transcripts for incoming students. Add semester grades each semester. Make sure permanent records are up to date.
  4. Conducts and organizes transition support for grades moving from 5thto 6thand from 8thto 9th.
  5. Assists students in course/subject selection while conducting the scheduling of the student body.
  6. Maintains student records on the computer relating to the counseling program and protects their confidentiality.
  7. Works to resolve students' educational hardships.
  8. Works to discover and develop special abilities of students.
  9. Helps prepare students for entry into an appropriate high school course of study.
  10. Assists in the placement in appropriate Summer School Programs.
  11. Guides students and families in their participation in school and community activities.
  12. Assists building in RTI monitoring by evaluating student aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual attendance patterns, positive behavior supports, academic progress, math and reading performance, and other pertinent intervention data.
  13. Helps students evaluate career interests and choices.
  14. Works to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  15. Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such things as home-family relations, peer group problems, health, and emotional adjustment.
  16. Confers with parents whenever necessary to include home visits, if necessary.
  17. Interprets the SUSD Guidance/Counseling Program to the community and makes Chapter House visitations.
  18. Assists in providing In-Service training in guidance and related fields to teachers.
  19. Assists administrators and teachers in matters of student discipline/attendance/academics.
  20. Assists in the orientation/mentoring of new faculty members.
  21. Organize and oversee small intervention groups each semester concerning topics such as substance abuse, divorce, death/dying, domestic violence, etc.
  22. Will demonstrate the competency in use of the computer.
  23. Will assist in the preparation and distribution of Student Progress Reports and Report Cards.
  24. Will prepare and submit to the Principal prior to leaving school at the end of the school year, a list indicating what class each student will be placed into according to teacher/Adm. recommendation. A log of counseling session data will be submitted at the end of each month.
  25. Will compile and publish an A and A/B Honor Roll in accordance with school policies.
  26. Will prepare and work with Principal in early spring to create a list of the students promoting or possible retentions from grade level to grade level.
  27. Will prepare and maintain a Counseling Service Handbook.
  28. Organizes and administers AIMS and tabulates those standardized tests required by district and any accompanying reports as needed.
  29. Maintains accurate inventory records and faithfully submits budget requests, requisitions, and work orders according to school and district policies/regulations/procedures.

30. Assists the administrators in implementing all policies/rules governing student life and conduct.

  1. Faithfully performs all special duty and extra duty assignments as required. (Example: Lunch duty, hall duty, class/club assignments.)
  2. Attend all staff meetings as required and serve on all staff committees as required.
  3. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  4. Performs other such tasks and assumes responsibilities as the Principal, Superintendent and Board may require.
  5. Faithfully follow those procedures and comply with those requirements as stated in the District and handbook.
