The Commercial Lines Master Field Underwriter represents the company within a defined territory of agencies, managing and servicing a profitable renewal book of Commercial Lines business with high technical underwriting standards. The role involves territory planning, performance analysis, and agency management to maximize production, profit, and retention. It leads the analysis of new business opportunities from exposure, pricing, service, and sales perspectives, facilitates collaboration meetings, and mentors less experienced field underwriters and agencies.
- Underwrites and manages a commercial lines book of business for the assigned territory, building strong relationships with agencies and achieving profit and revenue objectives.
- Acts as the primary contact for designated agencies, leading business planning and account management.
- Develops an account inventory of new business ahead of expiration dates to meet profit and revenue goals.
- Coordinates monthly renewal strategy discussions with underwriting and service teams for individual renewals.
- Reviews pipeline accounts regularly, assesses opportunities, and establishes underwriting relationships with policyholders.
- Underwrites and collaborates on new and renewal accounts, pre-qualifies customers, and leads the analysis of new business opportunities.
- Coordinates meetings for large or complex accounts following company guidelines.
- Evaluates exposures, determines pricing, and makes accept/reject decisions based on underwriting guidelines.
- Makes risk and pricing decisions throughout the policy lifecycle, documents decisions, and maintains supporting data per audit standards.
- Completes the Account Summary, records account details, and conducts post-mortem analyses on lost opportunities to improve sales and intelligence.
- Reviews and approves underwriting referrals from junior underwriters or managers, participates in state planning, and serves as the Account Steward to ensure commitments are met, maintaining regular communication with policyholders.
- Maintains effective communication on underwriting procedures, growth and profit goals, industry trends, and agency relations.
- Participates in quality assurance audits, contributes to underwriting projects, and recommends improvements in coverage, pricing, or competitive positioning.
- Travels as needed, including short-notice trips, utilizing the assigned fleet vehicle to cover the territory.
- Requires 8+ years of P&C Commercial Underwriting experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Business or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Valid driver's license with a record meeting company standards.
