Job summary

Atlas is seeking a Project Arborist to support transportation, utility and infrastructure projects with tree inventories, CRZ analyses and mitigation planning. You will work across a multidisciplinary team to ensure compliance and protect trees during project delivery.

The role requires ISA certification, field experience, strong writing skills and willingness to travel in Washington and Oregon. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is expected, with competitive compensation and benefits

Qualifications

  • ISA Certified Arborist credential in good standing.
  • 3 years of arboricultural assessments and tree protection support for infrastructure projects.
  • Experience developing, implementing and monitoring tree protection BMPs during construction.
  • Experience conducting inventories, reports, retention plans, and permit submittals.
  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Biology, Botany, Engineering or related field; equivalents accepted.
  • Strong technical writing, arborist, and regulatory reporting skills.
  • Ability to interpret tree regulations and apply them to planning and permitting.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Washington and Oregon for field work.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists and project managers to implement tree protection strategies.
  • Prepare reports, tree retention plans and permit applications per regulations.
  • Communicate findings clearly using GIS outputs to clients and stakeholders.
  • Conduct pre- and post-construction reviews, monitoring and compliance inspections.
  • Provide field direction for root pruning, fencing and other protection practices.
  • Review plans to identify impacts to retained trees and propose mitigations.
  • Coordinate with owners, agencies and teams on permit conditions and compliance.
  • Develop practical protection measures balancing project goals with preservation.

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Project Arborist to join our multi disciplinary environmental team The ideal candidate will have experience supporting transportation utility and infrastructure projects through tree inventories critical root zone analysis preservation planning construction compliance monitoring and regulatory permitting This role requires expertise in tree species identification health assessments risk evaluation and regulatory compliance to support project development and permitting

Core Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with engineers environmental scientists and project managers to develop and implement tree protection and mitigation strategies
  • Prepare technical reports tree retention plans and permit applications in accordance with local state and federal regulations
  • Utilize strong technical writing and GIS skills to effectively communicate findings to clients and stakeholders
  • Conduct pre and post construction site reviews construction monitoring and arborist compliance inspections
  • Provide field direction for root pruning branch pruning tree protection fencing excavation within critical root zones and other tree protection best management practices
  • Review grading utility drainage access and staging plans to identify potential impacts to retained trees
  • Develop practical tree protection and mitigation measures that balance project objectives with tree preservation goals
  • Coordinate with project owners regulatory agencies contractors and design teams regarding tree protection requirements permit conditions and compliance with local tree regulations
Minimum Qualifications
  • ISA Certified Arborist credential in good standing
  • 3 years of experience conducting arboricultural assessments and providing tree protection support for infrastructure utility transportation or development projects
  • Experience developing implementing and monitoring tree protection BMPs during construction; including root protection soil compaction mitigation and impact assessments
  • Experience conducting tree inventories and preparing tree assessment reports tree retention plans arborist compliance reports and permit submittal documents
  • Bachelors degree in Forestry Environmental Science Biology Botany Engineering or related field; equivalent professional experience may be substituted for education
  • Strong technical writing skills including preparation of arborist reports compliance reports protection plans and mitigation strategies
  • Ability to interpret and apply tree regulations municipal codes and environmental policies to project planning and permitting
  • Experience conducting Critical Root Zone CRZ evaluations and assessing construction impacts to retained trees
  • Ability to travel throughout Washington and Oregon for field assessments client meetings and construction support activities
Preferred Qualifications
  • ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification TRAQ
  • Proficiency with GIS mapping tools ArcGIS QGIS and GPS data collection
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with engineers landscape architects contractors and environmental planners
  • Proven ability to conduct tree replacement analyses and develop retention strategies
  • Experience providing technical guidance mentoring and quality control for arborists field staff or environmental professionals
