Job summary

Lighthouse Lab Services seeks a dedicated Microbiology/Molecular Laboratory Technical Coordinator in Anderson, SC. This full-time role provides day-to-day supervision of the laboratory's microbiology/molecular department and supports regulatory compliance across clinical programs.

The candidate will assist in recruiting, training, mentoring staff, and maintaining quality control and procedural manuals, while coordinating workflows and participating in performance improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from a regionally accredited college/university.
  • 4 years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • 1-2 years micro/molecular experience in culture setup, plate reading, gram stains, organism identification, susceptibility testing, and automated/molecular infectious disease testing.
  • Supervisory experience is preferred but not required.
  • Must provide proof of certification or certification eligibility for MT (ASCP), CLS (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (NCA/ASCP), or MT (AAB).

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of test performance across high, moderate, and waived complexity.
  • Address technical problems via on-site, phone, or electronic consultation with testing personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and regulatory standards (CLIA, DNV, CAP, AABB, etc.).
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate work activities of assigned sections/shifts.
  • Maintain attendance records for the department.
  • Assist in maintaining the Laboratory budget and conduct staff performance conversations.
  • Develop and maintain current SOPs for tests performed in the sections.
  • Research and implement new procedures, methodologies, and instrumentation.
  • Implement QC programs and maintain QC records.
  • Monitor analytic performance and ensure valid patient results; refer issues to director/manager.
  • Operate and troubleshoot equipment; coordinate maintenance with Biomed Engineering/contractors.
  • Prepare and submit administrative reports; manage supplies and reagents inventory.
  • Train new staff and maintain training records; provide ongoing training.
  • Assist in data collection and reporting for performance improvement programs.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Provide day-to-day workflow management and supervision of the Microbiology/Molecular Laboratory department. Supporting compliance and regulatory activities for the clinical programs and operational areas of the laboratory. Assists in recruiting, training, and mentoring team members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of high, moderate, and waived complexity test performance by laboratory testing personnel.
  • Must be accessible to address technical problems via on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation with testing personnel at any time that testing is performed in accordance with policies and procedures established by the laboratory Medical Director.
  • Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards as promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities such as CLIA, DNV, CAP, AABB, etc.
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates the work activities of assigned section(s) and shift(s).
  • Keeps accurate attendance records on all associates; maintains time and attendance records for the department.
  • Assists the Director/Manager in maintaining the Laboratory budget to include monthly analysis and variance reporting on expense details. Performs staff performance conversations that drive merit increases.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains current procedural manuals of all tests performed in the section(s) assigned and updates and reviews manuals biennially or more often as necessary.
  • Researches, evaluates, and implements new and improved procedures, methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques as assigned by the Director/Manager.
  • Implements an appropriate section and/or shift-specific Quality Control Program and maintains all applicable Quality Control and Functional Verification records.
  • Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. Reviews the work done by technologists/technicians working in the section(s) or shift(s) assigned to ensure a minimum of errors and corrective action in the interest of good patient care. Refers clinical problems to the laboratory director or manager as appropriate.
  • Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
  • Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots all equipment in assigned section(s) to keep in good working order; makes minor repairs and adjustments when necessary; initiates and follows through with Biomedical Engineering/equipment manufacturer for safety checks and repairs; schedules preventive maintenance within section with Biomedical Engineering, equipment manufacturer, or an outside contractor.
  • Prepares and submits routine or special administrative reports by due dates as required, requested, or delegated.
  • Orders and maintains inventories for all necessary supplies and reagents in assigned section(s) to always have an adequate amount on hand.
  • Trains new technologists and technicians in the assigned section(s) procedures and policies and provides subsequent training in all new or revised procedures and techniques for assigned shift(s) or provides remedial training as necessary. Responsible for maintaining orientation records on new associates.
  • Assists the Director/Manager in designing, implementing, collecting, and analyzing data, and reporting all phases of a comprehensive performance improvement program that involves
MINIMUM CANDIDATE PROFILE:
  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from a regionally accredited college/university or Education that has been evaluated by an acceptable credentialing agency and deemed equivalent to a US Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology.
  • 4 years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician required.
  • 1-2 years micro/molecular experience is needed in culture setup, plate reading, gram stains, organism identification, susceptibility testing, and automated/molecular infectious disease testing

SALARY/SCHEDULE/BENEFITS
  • Salary starts at $81,000 and goes up depending on experience and expertise
