Shift
Full‑time position with overtime as needed. Candidates should be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Preference will be given to applicants within commuting distance of Lancaster, PA.
Position Summary
The Laboratory Operations Manager receives authority from and reports to the Business Unit Manager. The Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the microbiology laboratory, ensuring adherence to quality systems, analyzing data, troubleshooting equipment, and overseeing personnel. The Manager also serves as backup to the Business Unit/Quality Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead, schedule, and train laboratory team members.
- Ensure that operations meet the highest quality and efficiency standards.
- Maintain laboratory coverage, performance, and morale.
- Promote the company vision and maintain a positive working environment.
- Assist the Business Unit Manager in daily management tasks such as scheduling, supervising, and instrument monitoring.
- Apply appropriate quality measures to meet or exceed government regulations and internal requirements.
- Promote the company image by exercising sound and ethical business practices.
- Follow Quality System documents, including the Quality Manual, SOPs, and Test Methods.
- Troubleshoot equipment, perform minor repairs, and coordinate major repairs with service personnel.
- Ensure equipment is properly cleaned, calibrated, and maintained.
- Maintain accurate records for daily work and quality control results.
- Assist staff in ensuring analytical work meets ISO requirements.
- Review and evaluate test data for technical accuracy and SOP compliance, performing basic statistical analysis.
- Investigate non‑conformances, determine corrective actions, and follow up to verify resolution.
- Create and review reports.
- Recruit, interview, and make hiring decisions for personnel reporting to this role.
- Train staff on test methods, SOPs, regulations, ISO requirements, and lab policies.
- Review annual performance of direct reports.
- Stay current on technical, industry, and business trends as directed by the Business Unit Manager.
- Maintain a state of readiness for all operations.
- Adhere to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Science or related field with 3–5 years of supervisory experience.
- Strong leadership, initiative, and team‑building skills.
- Experience with laboratory procedures, data analysis, computer operations, mathematics, and technical or business writing.
- Experience with PCR, ELISA, and cultural confirmation of Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli O157:H7.
- Strong computer, scientific, and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication, with strong attention to detail.
- Self‑motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, learn new techniques, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Maintain accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
