Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct research projects, such as improving sterilization procedures or developing drugs to combat infectious diseases
  • Perform laboratory experiments for a variety of purposes, such as to inform the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses
  • Isolate and maintain cultures of microorganisms for study
  • Identify and classify microorganisms found in specimens collected from humans, plants, animals, or the environment
  • Monitor the effect of microorganisms on plants, animals, other microorganisms, or the environment
  • Prepare technical reports and make recommendations based on research findings
  • Supervise biological technicians and evaluate the accuracy of their results
  • Collaborates with users and investigators on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; teaches and advises on techniques.
  • Interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates scientific research assignments concerned with unique or controversial problems.
  • Supplies technical leadership and consultation to professional co-workers and collaborators.
  • Prepares analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication; presents findings at local, national, and/or international meetings.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  • Perform microbiological, molecular, and biochemical studies of virus infection.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

The Microbiologist will work on projects related to studies of microorganisms such as viruses’ bacteria, fungi, and algae. He/she performs experiments to detect and study harmful microorganisms and obtains information on scientific and research measures. He/She will conduct research to examine physiological, morphological, and other additional characteristics of microorganisms. Additionally, this position provides research and laboratory services to other researchers in department and in Meharry to support microbiology/virology drug development and treatment. He/she will also study and conduct research on the relationships between organisms and disease or other correlations. Additional duties will entail preparing technical reports, scientific manuscripts, proposals and recommendations based off of research outcomes. He/she will be required to document the growth, structure, development, and general characteristics of microorganism including viruses, bacteria and others.

  • Knowledge of engineering and/or scientific research principles, practices, and protocols.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of research methodology, principles and procedures.
  • Ability to develop scientific reports and manuscripts based on original research
