Job description

The Mental Health Technician (MHT)/Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing blood samples from patients, utilizing specialized skills to interact calmly with individuals experiencing anxiety or distress related to blood draws, ensuring patient comfort and safety. When not performing phlebotomy duties, the MHT observes and assists mental health or substance abuse patients and helps with admission activities. MHTs maintain a safe environment in Adult or Adolescent Admissions and support general nursing tasks to assess patients admitted to the hospital.

Shift details: Per diem as needed

Essential Duties:

  • Identify the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, prepare specimens for testing, and perform screening procedures.
  • Provide diagnostic notes to physicians, healthcare professionals, and hospitals.
  • Verify patient identification and explain sampling procedures.
  • Obtain blood specimens via venipunctures and finger sticks.
  • Maintain specimen integrity using aseptic techniques and observing isolation procedures.
  • Analyze blood specimens with appropriate testing equipment as needed.
  • Clean, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment used for blood drawing and testing.
  • Order laboratory supplies as necessary.
  • Conduct Q15s and 1:1 observations according to hospital standards, ensuring no gaps in observation.
  • Follow directions from RN or LVN and float to any unit as needed, without pushing back.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with patients and staff.
  • Observe patients for behavioral changes, work on de-escalation, and notify RN of significant changes.
  • Respond to all codes, ensuring observations are maintained during rounds or 1:1 situations.
  • Assist patients with hygiene, maintain unit cleanliness, and keep patients on schedule.
  • Speak respectfully to patients, recognizing that communication style can escalate situations.
  • Use appropriate phone etiquette and address customer questions professionally.
  • Conduct soft safety searches, check for contraband, and inform RN if found.
  • Assist RN in taking vital signs if staffing allows.
  • Inventory patient belongings and alert RN of medications found.
  • Escort patients out for MOT or to activities like eating.
  • Treat patients with dignity and respect, understanding patient rights, and ensuring safety and well-being.

Education and/or Licensure: High school diploma or equivalent; Certified Phlebotomy Technician Certificate issued by Massachusetts.

Experience: Prior phlebotomy experience preferred; psychiatric healthcare experience helpful.

Additional Requirements: Valid CPR certification and CPI training within 30 days of hire.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 100 pounds, and perceive attributes of objects by touch.
  • Effective spoken communication, including conveying detailed instructions.
  • Hearing ability to perceive detailed sounds.
  • Perform repetitive motions and work in varying environmental conditions, mostly indoors.
