DESCRIPTION
Sinch Mailgun is looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Mailgun Optimize team. You will help pioneer and operate products such as Email Validation, Inbox Placement, and Reputation Monitoring. These systems process tens of millions of requests per day and are still growing. An ideal candidate will have a strong sense of ownership, be self‑directed, and comfortable leading a team of engineers across varying levels of seniority. You thrive in environments where prioritization matters and can balance hands‑on technical judgment with leading and aligning the team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads, mentors, and grows a high‑performing engineering team through regular 1:1s, coaching, and career development conversations.
- Owns hiring, onboarding, and performance management to build an inclusive, high‑trust team culture.
- Guides design and architecture decisions to satisfy business requirements based on the product roadmap and vision.
- Makes recommendations based upon established vision and associated analysis to satisfy tactical, operational, and strategic needs.
- Partners with Product, Design, and business stakeholders to align on priorities, refine requirements, and communicate engineering progress.
- Drives OKR planning, execution, and cross‑team coordination to consistently deliver on commitments.
- Designs sustainable solutions and processes that minimize developer support and intervention.
- Identifies and mitigates technical risk early, escalating blockers and tradeoffs to leadership proactively.
- Fosters a team culture of engineering excellence.
REQUIREMENTS
- 5+ years of professional software development experience.
- 3+ years of engineering management or tech lead experience, with a demonstrated track record of growing engineers and delivering complex projects.
- Experience working in an Agile environment with CI/CD practices.
- Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) and their tradeoffs.
- Experience with highly scalable distributed systems capable of handling millions of requests.
- Experience working with and maintaining RESTful APIs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to discuss complex topics with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Proficiency in scripting (Python, Bash, or similar).
- Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain engineering talent.
PREFERRED
- Experience with email systems.
- Experience with observability tools (Kibana, Grafana).

SALARY
The annual starting salary for this position is between $120,000 - $180,000. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications.
