Job summary

Magellan Health is seeking an independently licensed mental health professional for the role of Assignment Ready Counselor. You will provide on-demand counseling services for military service members and their families.

The ideal candidate will have a Master's Degree in mental health, a valid independent license, and should be willing to work on short notice, including weekends. This role involves delivering training, conducting assessments, and maintaining accurate records.

Job Summary

This position requires an independently licensed mental health professional (Counselor, Therapist, or Social Worker) in any state. The Assignment Ready Counselor (ARC) will provide short‑term, surge, and on‑demand counseling services for military service members and their families, supporting On Demand Events, Surges, Summer Camps, and MFLC program backfills. The ARC may cover adult and child/youth counseling (CYB) across military installations, DoDEA schools, community schools, and youth programs during the defined assignment periods.

Responsibilities

• Provide non‑medical, solution‑focused counseling directly to adults, children, and youth.
• Conduct assessments, brief counseling, action planning, referrals, and follow‑ups as indicated.
• Deliver training and health‑wellness presentations, participate in health fairs, and support installation activities.
• Collaborate with installation and military branch Points of Contact (POC) to ensure program scope and needs are met.
• Maintain accurate counselor activity data daily through mobile or web application.
• Respond promptly to emergent situations on bases or in schools, including traversing varied terrain and weather conditions.
• Establish a presence that encourages confidentiality and accessibility for service members, families, students, and staff.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree from an accredited graduate program in mental health or social work.
• Valid independent licensure as a Counselor, Therapist, or Social Worker (state-specific).
• Ability to work on short notice, including weekends, with assignments ranging from a weekend to two weeks.
• Experience in brief therapy and solution‑focused counseling methods.
• Proficient in English and U.S. citizenship required.
• For CYB assignments, experience with children and youth and knowledge of child and adolescent development.
• Preferred: Prior military service or strong familiarity with military culture.

Licensure & Certifications

• Must hold current licensure that meets state or customer–specific requirements (e.g., LPC, LPCC).
• Driver’s license is required; valid in‑state license needed.
• Additional certifications if preferred, but not required.
