Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking a Metrologist to keep statewide measurement systems accurate, performing calibrations on mass, volume, length, time and force standards for diverse agencies and industries.

You will contribute to accreditation, safety practices, and quality systems, while supporting measurement assurance programs and preparing calibration certificates per ISO standards. The role is on-site with standard lab facilities and a daytime schedule.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in engineering, physics or math with 1 year metrology lab experience, or
  • Associate degree in metrology with 3 years metrology lab experience.
  • NIST LAP trainings: Fundamentals of Metrology, Mass Metrology, Volume Metrology.
  • Able to perform essential job functions.
  • Veterans' preference under Pennsylvania law is noted.

Responsibilities

  • Perform calibrations on mass, volume, length, time and force standards.
  • Calibrate field equipment used by state and local officials.
  • Support laboratory accreditation through audits and corrective actions.
  • Engage in regional measurement assurance programs and data evaluation.

THE POSITION

As a Metrologist with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania you will have the opportunity to help keep statewide measurement systems accurate and reliable. You will support important programs that serve communities and industries across Pennsylvania by performing calibrations on precision standards of mass, volume, length, time and force submitted by private industry, state agencies and law enforcement agencies. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on performing precise calibrations that support statewide measurement reliability. You will contribute to the laboratory's accreditation, safety practices, and quality systems. As a Metrologist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Calibration Work: Conduct calibrations on mass, volume, length, time, and force standards for agencies and industry
  • Field Standards: Calibrate field equipment used by state and local officials while handling items that require standing and lifting in accordance with procedures
  • Accreditation Support: Participate in maintaining laboratory accreditation through audits, data evaluation, and corrective action activities
  • Measurement Assurance: Engage in regional measurement assurance programs and use statistical techniques to evaluate data in real time
  • Laboratory Care: Assist in cleaning laboratory floors, walls, tables, benches, and equipment as assigned
  • Certificate Preparation: Prepare calibration certificates according to ISO and laboratory standards

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • The duties of this position are conducted on an on-site lab with workstations and equipment necessary to the role.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or mathematics and one year of professional experience in a metrology laboratory; or
  • An associates degree in metrology and three years of professional experience in a metrology laboratory. Weights and measures enforcement experience may be substituted for education at the rate of one year of experience for one year of education.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) training seminars, including laboratory auditing problems (LAP's).
