Job summary

City of Mesquite invites applications for a Maintenance Worker II Utilities position responsible for the maintenance, repair, service and installation of commercial and residential water meters, and for assisting the public with meter-related questions.

The role requires basic plumbing experience, a high school diploma, a valid driver's license, and willingness to work an evening schedule. A strong commitment to customer service and accurate record keeping is essential.

Qualifications

  • One year of experience in maintenance and repair of plumbing or meter-reading equipment.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Obtain Class "C" Distribution certification within one year of probationary period, if hired after January 1, 2003.

Responsibilities

  • Replace water meters and meter parts including gaskets, curb stops and meter boxes.
  • Inspect meters for leaks and repair leaks.
  • Install and discontinue water services.
  • Read meters and assist customers with meter problems and collect past due water bills for commercial customers.
  • Operate tools and equipment including trucks and hand tools; maintain records.
  • Work on-call duty as needed.
  • Provide excellent customer service and educate customers on water usage programs.

Job description

Salary: $19.00/hr.

To perform a variety of skilled duties and responsibilities involved in the maintenance, repair, service and installation of commercial and residential water meters; and to assist the public with water meter activities.

SUPERVISION
  • General supervision is provided by the Utility Supervisor (Meter Services).
  1. Perform the replacement of water meters and meter parts including meter gaskets, curb stops and meter boxes.
  2. Inspect meters for water leaks; repair meter leaks.
  3. Inspect, maintain, repair, test and service commercial and residential water meters; check for low water pressure conditions; overhaul water meters as required; inspect new meter settings.
  4. Install and discontinue water services.
  5. Inspect newly installed water meters to ensure safe and satisfactory functioning.
  6. Provide water utility customer services including re-reading meters and assisting customers with meter problems and collect past due water bills for commercial only. Educate customers on the water usage program (WaterSmart).
  7. Operate a variety of tools and equipment including trucks, hand-held computers, torches and hand tools; perform general maintenance duties including refueling and making minor adjustments as necessary.
  8. Read commercial water meters using computerized meter reading equipment; make necessary calculations. Install and repair radio read meters.
  9. Work on call duty as needed.
  10. Keep accurate maintenance records.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION
  • High School Diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE
For external applicants:
  • One year of experience involving the maintenance and repair of plumbing, meter reading equipment or other related equipment.
For internal promotions:
  • Three months of experience working in the Maintenance Worker II Utilities classification, Meter Reader classification or other relevant City classification involving the maintenance and repair of plumbing, meter reading equipment or other related equipment.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Obtain a Class "C" Distribution certification from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within one year of successful completion of probationary period, if hired after January 1, 2003. Failure to obtain certification will result in non-disciplinary termination.
WORK SCHEDULE
  • Monday - Friday 4:00pm to 9:00pm
