The successful candidate will work with advanced metering infrastructure and automated meter-reading technology, maintain and repair meters and related equipment, respond to customer service needs, and help ensure accurate and reliable meter information.

This recruitment may be filled as either a Meter Service Technician, Grade H, or Meter Service Technician II, Grade J, depending on the selected applicant's experience, certifications, technical knowledge, and demonstrated ability.

Primary Responsibilities

Depending on the level of the position, responsibilities may include:

  • Monitoring the AMI/AMR network and identifying meter or communication deficiencies using reports, real-time data, and diagnostic tools.
  • Diagnosing communication interruptions, meter failures, abnormal consumption patterns, and other system discrepancies.
  • Installing, removing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing retail, wholesale, commercial, industrial, and internal District meters.
  • Setting meters and radios for new connections and completing service turn-ons, shutoffs, and delinquency disconnections.
  • Repairing stuck or damaged meters, angle valves, meter boxes, remote equipment, and related field infrastructure.
  • Reading and verifying commercial, industrial, and wholesale meters for billing purposes.
  • Inspecting meter vaults, conducting confined-space testing, identifying valve problems, and documenting deficiencies.
  • Responding to customers regarding water service, meter operation, consumption calculations, usage concerns, and complaints.
  • Entering accurate meter, maintenance, repair, testing, and work-order information into District software systems.
  • Performing traffic-control and flagging responsibilities at field worksites.
  • Assisting with large-meter inspections, MAG-meter calibration, system audits, and other specialized projects.

Employees appointed at the Technician II level will perform more advanced troubleshooting and data analysis, work with greater independence, assist with specialized wholesale and large-meter work, and provide field guidance and informal training to Meter Service Technician employees.

  • Forklift and flagging certifications.
  • Proficiency with AMI/AMR systems, handheld meter-reading devices, and diagnostic software.
  • Ability to perform intermediate-to-advanced troubleshooting of retail, wholesale, and internal meters.
  • Ability to interpret technical information, analyze consumption patterns, and identify discrepancies.
  • Strong customer-service and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings and assist with customer concerns.
  • Ability to provide field guidance and informal training to less-experienced technicians.

Technical training in mechanical maintenance, electronics, metering systems, or water operations is preferred. Experience troubleshooting meters or communication networks is also preferred.
