Job summary

American Electric Power (AEP) is seeking a Meter Electrician C to install and maintain self-contained meters in the shop and on customer premises in Indiana. The role involves testing, programming, and servicing meters, with opportunities to advance to higher levels.

You will read meters for billing, perform voltage checks, troubleshoot faults, and support credit/collections activities for non-payment. Overtime and weekend work are required as needed.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in electrical/electronic technology, or an equivalent education/work combination of four years.
  • Qualified backgrounds include substation, metering, instrumentation, controls, power systems, or electrical maintenance with hands-on testing and troubleshooting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Read meters for field orders and cycle billing.
  • Install, remove, change, disconnect, and reconnect meters.
  • Test single-phase, network, and polyphase meters for proper operation.
  • Program meters.
  • Perform credit and collections related to orders including disconnects for non-payment.
  • Investigate irregular usage and energy diversion.
  • Repair meters, sockets, and enclosures.
  • Order, receive, ship, store, and inventory meters and equipment.
  • Investigate power quality problems and produce reports.
  • Program, test, and troubleshoot relay controls for capacitors, regulators, and reclosers.
  • Install antennas and radios for smart grid devices.
  • Work from ladders and elevated platforms.

This job description reflects the Meter Electrician C job duties and requirements. Additional responsibilities and qualifications are needed in order to qualify at a higher level of a Meter Electrician B or A.

What you'll do as a Meter Electrician C
  • Read meters as required for field order and on schedule for cycle billing.
  • Install, remove, change, disconnect, and reconnect meters.
  • Test single-phase, network, and polyphase self-contained meters for proper operation and accuracy.
  • Program meters.
  • Perform Credit and Collections related to order including disconnect and reconnect for non-payment.
  • Investigate irregular usage.
  • Investigate energy diversion.
  • Repair meters, meter sockets, and meter enclosures.
  • Order, receive, ship, store, and inventory meter and associated equipment.
  • Investigate self-contained service power quality problems, install event recorders, neutral testers, and produce reports.
  • Program, test, and troubleshoot relay controls for capacitors, regulators, and reclosers.
  • Install antennas and radios for smart grid devices.
  • Perform work from ladders and elevated platforms.

  • Within 24 months of employment, successfully complete the Company's training and qualification program for this position including: classroom instruction; written examination; job mentoring; and job performance demonstrations.
  • Work overtime as needed including extended daily shifts and weekends.
  • Work late shifts as needed.
  • Work independently under semi-direct supervision in a safe-efficient, and productive manner.
  • Proficiently use computers and applications related to this position.
  • Effectively communicate with other employees, customer, and the public in a courteous and appropriate manner.
  • Promote a positive image of the Company to customer and the public.
  • Comply with all aspects of the AEP Corporate Code of Conduct.
  • Report hazards and abnormal conditions.
  • Attend and participate in training as assigned and assist in the training of other employees.
  • There are additional expectations for the job and could include specific work experience, license / certifications, preemployment testing, expectations about travel, shift work, etc.
Minimum Qualifications for all levels
  • Associate degree in electrical/electronic technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience of four years.
  • Qualified backgrounds include substation, metering, instrumentation, controls, power systems, or electrical maintenance, with demonstrated hands-on experience in testing, troubleshooting, and working with electrical equipment. Examples include roles such as Meter Specialist, Meter Technician, Field Network Technician, or substation field personnel, as well as comparable military or industrial technical training.
Minimum experience for Meter Electrician B
  • 24 months as a Meter Electrician C
Minimum experience for Meter Electrician A
  • 24 Months experience as a Meter Electrician B.
Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below
  • Valid State Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain a medical certification card, if determined to be required by law.

  • Compensation Range: $30.12 - $56.36

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: M - Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
