Job summary

State of Michigan's transportation team seeks Transportation Technicians to perform metals testing, fabrication inspection, and material sampling. You will schedule and perform maintenance on lab equipment and assist with evaluating new methods, reporting results, and supporting field inspections.

The role offers opportunities for growth from Technician 8 through E10, with remote work options considered within policy. A valid driver's license and completion of Excel documentation are required.

Qualifications

• Possess a valid driver's license.
• Attach a separate document with a paragraph on how you have used Microsoft Excel.
• Attach an example of an Excel spreadsheet you created.
• Attach transcripts and/or foreign degree evaluation if applicable.

Responsibilities

• Perform metals testing, fabrication inspection, and material sampling.
• Store and distribute final metals test reports.
• Schedule and perform routine and as-needed maintenance and calibrations on laboratory equipment.
• Assist with evaluation of new test methods and equipment and share process improvements with supervisor.
• Support other personnel with technical assistance regarding metals testing, specifications, and procedures.
• Perform fabrication inspection of simple structural precast concrete and bridge/structural steel products.
• Assist with visual inspection of fabricated products upon arrival in the field.
• Assist with other duties assigned by supervisor.

Skills

Excel proficiency

Education

Associate degree in concrete technology, civil technology, construction technology, surveying technology, construction management, mathematics, or computer science

Bachelor's degree or higher in Applied Science/Science with 16 semester hours in job-specific or related coursework

60 semester credits with relevant coursework substitution

Four years technician-level experience substituting for degree

Certifications in bituminous (hot mix), concrete, density testing, or aggregate gradation
