The Challenge

We are looking for an experienced Metals Material Specialist to join our Materials & Testing team.

In this role, you will:

  1. Perform assessments of producer, contractor, NCDOT, and other technicians to ensure they are performing quality control and acceptance testing properly according to prescribed standards and specifications.
  2. Determine if technicians can competently sample, test, and inspect structural steel products for compliance with NCDOT Specifications. Items inspected include steel beams and girders, welds, paint and other coatings, gray iron castings, bridge expansion joints, nuts, bolts, and washers at production sites and on projects throughout North Carolina and neighboring states. These materials are used in the maintenance and construction of roads and structures. Ensuring they meet standards requires you to stay current on specifications and policy changes.
  3. Ensure critical engineering decisions related to roadway material conformance by NCDOT staff are sound and consistent. The quality and conformance of materials affect NCDOT project delivery. Non-compliance can result in withholding reimbursement funds for federally-funded projects.

What You Bring

  • Ability to analyze discrepancies, compile reports, suggest solutions, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to make recommendations on non-routine engineering and program matters requiring technical expertise.
  • Skill in evaluating and approving program/project specifications for compliance with engineering principles, standards, and codes.
  • Knowledge of compliance oversight for multiple construction materials and products.
  • Ability to evaluate staff for competency in sampling/testing per regulations.
  • Safety awareness around hazardous materials and adherence to safety requirements.
  • Ability to operate a state vehicle safely.
