The Materials and Tests Unit is responsible for establishing acceptance criteria for materials and manufactured products used in the North Carolina Highway System, ensuring they meet standards and function properly.
The primary role of this position is to assess producer, contractor, Department, and technician performance in quality control and acceptance testing according to prescribed standards and specifications. The Specialist will evaluate if technicians can competently sample, test, and inspect structural steel products, including steel beams, welds, coatings, castings, bridge joints, nuts, bolts, and washers, at production sites and on projects across North Carolina and neighboring states.
These materials are critical for the maintenance and construction of roads and structures. Staying current with latest specifications and policy changes is essential.
This role ensures that engineering decisions related to material conformance are sound, impacting project delivery and compliance with federal funding requirements.
Associate’s degree in engineering technology with six years of technician experience, or high school/GED with eight years of experience, or an equivalent education and experience combination. Refer to oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for details.
