Job description

Position Summary:

Develops and analyzes test results and examines metals and alloys under the direction of the Met Lab Manager or an experienced Metallurgist by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Other duties may be assigned. Employees must follow safe work practices and adhere to Company policies and procedures related to job safety. All functions should be performed honestly, ethically, and professionally, in accordance with Company policies. For any uncertainties regarding policies, employees should seek clarification from superiors or authorized representatives.

  1. Interact with outside testing labs to write testing purchase orders based on test plans, and organize samples for testing.
  2. Maintain and organize test remnants in controlled areas.
  3. Collect, organize, and examine test results; approve or reject test reports according to specifications.
  4. Match test plan paperwork with purchase orders, certifications, and invoices.
  5. Understand and interpret customer specification requirements.
  6. Study blueprints to correctly orient test coupons.
  7. Analyze test results using statistical methods such as descriptive statistics, histograms, correlation, and regression analysis.
  8. Assist the Metallurgy department in resolving metallurgical test failures.
  9. Coordinate routine microscopic examinations of metals and alloys with testing houses to determine characteristics like crystal structure and phase morphology.
  10. Prepare and photograph metal specimens using electronic camera equipment and microscopes.
  11. Use Alloy ID/Electrical Conductivity equipment to measure chemical composition and other characteristics of metals.
  12. Perform lab heat treatments on test samples/forgings to assess strength, hardness, elasticity, toughness, and microscopic features.
  13. Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Experience & Education
  • High School diploma or GED; or 1-2 years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, handle objects, and communicate verbally. Frequently reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; taste or smell. Occasionally climb or balance. Must regularly lift/move up to 35 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work Environment
  • Exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and occasionally outside weather conditions and electrical shock risks. Noise levels are usually loud.
