Howmet Aerospace Structures is seeking a Metallurgical Laboratory Engineer at our Niles location. This position requires high level communication across the organization on metallurgical and processing concepts to customers, operating personnel, other company departments, technical staff, and upper-level management.

Responsibilities:

  • Support a team of technicians and other laboratory personnel in an aerospace material, manufacturing-based organization in the fulfillment of product testing
  • Directly responsible for the operation, training, preventative maintenance of equipment used in chemical analysis and metallurgical testing of titanium alloys.
  • Maintain all required NADCAP MTL certifications
  • Develop business cases for capital investment and implementation of laboratory equipment
  • Develop, implement, and maintain functional SPC for key product characteristics as defined in process maps and PFMEA documents
  • Provide technical support and lead problem-solving efforts regarding metallurgical and mechanical property issues. Lead the efforts in developing more robust manufacturing processes.
  • Develop and execute metallurgical training for the technical and operations organizations. Develop the next generation of metallurgical talent for the Niles site.
  • Interact with R&D team as needed regarding complex metallurgical challenges, and jointly develop engineering solutions
  • Define and execute qualification plans for new equipment
  • Ensure the organization maintains strong subject-matter expertise for all testing methods in chemical analysis and mechanical property assessments performed by the Niles, OH laboratory
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules and external suppliers for those services

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or chemistry is required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 5+ years in a materials testing laboratory. Experience in a metals industry is preferred.
  • Experience with LECO Oxygen/Nitrogen/Carbon testers, and Optical Emission Spectrometer (ARL or equivalent).
  • Experience with Instron tensile testing equipment
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team atmosphere. Ability to manage multiple and complex tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to interact effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Possess good problem-solving skills for supporting all aspects of the testing laboratory
  • Intermediate to Advanced skill level in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. SAP experience a plus.
  • Experience with statistical software is required. Six Sigma Black Belt is preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Experience with NADCAP Materials Testing Laboratory accreditation is essential.
