Job summary

Leidos is seeking an Optical Engineer (Computational Imaging) to advance meta-optic-enabled imaging for space missions. You will design and validate infrared meta-optic systems, connect optical design to digital reconstruction, and help develop end-to-end optimization of optical and computational parameters.

Collaboration with cross-functional teams and experimental validation are key components of the role.

Qualifications

BS or MS with 6+ years for MS; 8+ years for BS option; Doctorate possible.
Experience in computational imaging or related field.
Experience with Fourier optics, wave propagation, diffraction, and coherence theory.
Experience with optimization methods in computational imaging (gradient-based, regularization, or statistical estimation).
Familiarity with ML-based reconstruction or inference methods (CNNs or similar).
Proficient in Python with NumPy/SciPy; MATLAB or C++ also relevant.

Responsibilities

Design, model, and validate infrared meta-optic systems with digital reconstruction and inference algorithms.
Develop computational imaging models linking optics, detector response, calibration, and inference performance.
Create simulation tools for forward imaging, inverse problems, reconstruction, and end-to-end opto-digital optimization.
Evaluate image quality, SNR, fidelity, and classification performance; support design trades and system-level evaluations.
Collaborate with senior engineers, analyze experimental data, and document results for internal R&D.
