Job summary

Sac and Fox Tribe of Iowa's Meskwaki Settlement School is seeking a Food Service Worker to support daily meal preparation, cooking, baking and serving in a K-12 cafeteria.

The role requires completing a high school diploma, food-service experience, ability to read recipes, and adherence to safety standards; training and supervision coverage when needed.

Qualifications

• Two years in school food services or four years in related food service.
• Experience in preparing food for large quantities.

• Food handler's permit (existing or obtainable during probation).
• Stand for an eight-hour shift; lift 10–50 pounds as needed.

• Plan and prioritize work with a team.

JOB TITLE: Food Service Worker DEPARTMENT: Meskwaki Settlement School

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Prepares, produces, heats, cooks, bakes and serves a variety of foods including entrees, meats, vegetables, breads, salads, fresh fruit, sandwiches, beverages or other foods specified by the menus, recipes and production records.
• Sets up food and food services areas and serves food.
• Operates kitchen equipment such as, but not limited to, mixers, slicers, ovens, stove tops, tilt-skillets and kettles, warmers, coolers, dishwasher, garbage disposals.
• Utilizes kitchenware such as, but not limited to knives, spatulas, whisks, tongs, spoons, ladles and measuring devices.
• Prepares, handles, stores and disposes of food in accordance with appropriate safety standards. Cleans kitchen equipment, counters, serving lines and helps with all dishes and trays when needed. Cleans freezers, coolers and dry storage areas daily, weekly and monthly as needed.
• Helps supervisor plan daily work schedule. Ordering and receiving inventory. Monthly menus and production records.
• Strives to create a positive and friendly environment with emphasis in making children feel at ease and enjoy their cafeteria experience.
• Serves as a helpful leader and must be able to produce daily menu items when the supervisor is absent.
• Participates in in-service training programs, as assigned. Provides orientation and training for new cafeteria staff.
• Observes safety and security procedures, reports potentially unsafe conditions.

REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Two (2) years of experience in school food services or (4) years in related food service.
• Knowledge of and experience in food preparation, particularly in preparing large quantities.
• Ability to interact positively with students, supervisors and staff.
• Ability to read and interpret written instructions/recipes.
• Must have, or be able to obtain during the probationary period, a food handler's permit.
• Physical ability to walk and stand for an eight (8) hour shift; stand for extended periods; and to exert 10 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
• Ability to work with others and without close supervision.
• Ability to follow instructions and respond to supervisor direction and take responsibility to complete tasks on own.
• Ability to prepare, produce, cook, bake, assemble and serve a large quantity of foods.
• Ability to prioritize and plan work activities rapidly and efficiently with a team.
• Ability to work cohesively with peers, supervisors, school personnel and students.
• Ability to exhibit objectivity and openness to others' views, give and welcome feedback, and contribute to building a positive team. Can build morale and team commitments to goals and objectives and support everyone's efforts.
• Ability to meet challenges with resourcefulness and generate suggestions for improving work.

SALARY LEVEL:

• Salary Range: $16.00 per hour
