Role Description

The San Francisco SPCA imagines a community where all pet guardians will have access to quality care for their pets. Reporting into the Chief Medical Officer, the Mentoring Veterinarian is a highly motivated, clinically skilled, dynamic leader, passionate about innovating and optimizing the quality and delivery of veterinary services of our full-service, general practice Mission Campus Veterinary Hospital.

The Mentoring Veterinarian will be passionate about building high performing, collaborative teams of approximately ten (10) Veterinarians and forty (40) technicians with the support of two Nursing Care Managers.

This hands-on leadership position is responsible for advancing and implementing the medical strategy and protocols defined by the Chief Medical Officer. The SF SPCA Veterinary Hospital is also supported by a Senior Director of Clinical Operations with whom the Mentoring Veterinarian will work hand-in-hand to ensure quality medical and patient care are considered in all operational efficiencies, yet the Mentoring Veterinarian position is largely removed from operations, so their focus remains on medicine and clinical team development.

The San Francisco SPCA Veterinary Hospital provides wellness, general practice, urgent care services, surgery, dental, and advanced diagnostics. Supported by a full in-house nursing team, our veterinarians have the trained medical support required for a high-volume hospital seeing over 25,000 visits per year. As a nonprofit organization, we are uniquely positioned in the community and provide financial assistance and surgical grants to pet guardians in need.

Core Responsibilities

Leadership and Veterinary Medical Care

  • Partner with the Chief Medical Officer, Senior Director of Hospital Operations and other leaders across the organization to guide and implement SF SPCA Hospital goals and vision to maintain a sustainable financial model.
  • Provide leadership for the changing landscape in veterinary care and the anticipated on-going DVM storage.
  • Cultivate and lead a collaborative hospital team, instilling a strong sense of belonging, commitment, and passion.
  • Provide leadership, oversight, and medical guidance on a wide variety of medical and surgical cases, including development and implementation of incremental care plans when appropriate.
  • Provide guidance for case selection and oversight of the hospital’s financial assistance program to ensure that impact of funds are maximized and managed to budget in partnership with Hospital Operations & Administration.
  • Design, update, and implement medical protocol/standards of care for the hospital, working with the nursing team to develop and implement medical standard operating procedures and protocols.
  • Partner with the Clinical Operations leaders to ensure the hospital is in full compliance with all state and federal laws and accreditation requirements regarding the practice of veterinary medicine, controlled substances, and animal welfare. Participate in strategic planning, annual departmental budget & goal setting, and implementation of the organization’s vision.
  • Partner with Community Medicine, Behavior Medicine and Shelter Medicine leaders to establish standards of veterinary medical care for all public clients and ensure consistency of approach.
  • Foster teamwork and communication across the organization, ensuring the hospital programs are working effectively with all departments.
  • Represent the organization publicly, advancing our reputation as a partner and leader.
  • Represent and share the SF SPCA’s innovation and expertise by presenting at local and national meetings and conferences.
  • Provide veterinary care ranging from wellness to special procedures as appropriate.

Staff Development

  • Attract, develop, and retain clinical talent to ensure that people with the right skills and motivations are in the right place at the right time.
  • Create an environment that embraces change and seeks to innovate care delivery, with an emphasis on spectrum of care approaches.
  • Identify and create opportunities to further individual development and retention to ensure ongoing veterinary staff competency.
  • Empower Veterinarians to grow, lead, and innovate through teaching & mentoring.
  • Promote teamwork, high professional standards, and continuing skills development.
  • Utilize the SF SPCA’s annual professional development programs to assist team members with the creation of annual professional development plans, provide ongoing feedback, and conduct quarterly goal progress checks with direct reports.
  • Plan and execute regularly scheduled team meetings to ensure staff are kept abreast of relevant operational updates, medical techniques and products and general Society information.
  • Cultivate and support a culture of philanthropy on the team and in the organization that is aligned with the SF SPCA’s mission and values.

Operational Effectiveness

  • Partner with the Chief Medical Officer and Sr. Director of Clinical Operations on an annual budget and KPIs supporting the hospital’s strategic goals and operating plan.
  • Ensure responsible administration of Financial Assistance programs.
  • Partner with the Sr. Director of Clinical Operations guiding workload, workflow, and scheduling to ensure maximum efficiency.

Client Services

  • Ensure client service excellence by fostering a relationship-centered practice.
  • Coordinate regularly with Nursing leadership, Client Experience Services leadership, and Clinical Operations leadership to ensure effective customer service and patient care processes.
  • Collaborate with Marketing on reputation management and improvement initiatives.
  • Investigate and respond to medical concerns and complaints and report results.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited veterinary medical college – DVM/VMD or equivalent.
  • Licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of California, or ability to obtain license.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a full-time practicing veterinarian, ideally in a multi-veterinarian small animal practice.
  • Minimum of three (3) years in a leadership position in a Veterinary Medicine setting.
  • As the lead veterinarian, excellent diagnostic, clinical, and surgical skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated success in leading a diverse team of professionals, skilled in managing varied relationships and successful at facilitating collaboration and cooperation.
  • Adept at confronting challenges with directness, professionalism, and compassion to nip challenges in the bud early and often.
  • Ability to embrace and foster change, creatively solve problems, and inspire confidence through frequent communications (oral and written, in-person and electronic).
  • Proven ability to implement best practices and achieve results.
  • Team player who has the ability to interface with all levels throughout the organization.
  • Comfortable and proficient with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, OneNote), veterinary practice software.
  • Self-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasks on time.
  • Decisive with the ability to explain rationale behind actions taken.
  • Commitment to the mission, values, and goals of the SF SPCA.

Salary & Benefits

The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $240,000 - $270,000.
