Job description

Heart of Texas Veterinary Specialty Center, located in Round Rock, TX (a suburb of Austin), is currently seeking a full-time ER Veterinarian Mentor to join our team.

OUR PRACTICE

We are an AAHA accredited, Fear Free Certified (currently the ONLY ER/Specialty hospital that is certified in the area!), full-service 24/7 hospital, with dedicated doctors providing high-quality medical care to the companion animal population in Austin and surrounding areas. Our specialties include Emergency, Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Oncology (Medical). Our long-term specialists are dedicated to quality medicine. We partner with an on-site cardiologist two days a week and have ultrasound (performed with a sonographer and reviewed by a radiologist) available Monday-Saturday.

The hospital is equipped with diagnostic and treatment equipment such as commercial-grade lab diagnostics, ECG, blood pressure monitoring, pulse oximetry, anesthesia, endoscopy, ultrasound (including bedside), telemetry, blood gas analysis, cystoscopy, cryotherapy, and CT imaging. Facilities include an isolation ward. We are planning to move to a new facility built to our specifications in early 2025.

For ER staffing, we have a supportive relief pool. The hospital management and medical directors value open communication and prioritize DVM well-being.

OUR LOCATION

The Austin area offers a vibrant lifestyle with diverse activities, renowned as "The Live Music Capital of the World," with a lively restaurant scene, festivals, outdoor activities, and water sports on local lakes and rivers. The climate features mild winters, warm summers, and abundant sunshine.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ER MENTOR ROLE:
  1. Have a love for ER medicine and a desire to share that passion.
  2. Mentor new DVM hires for up to two years, depending on experience.
  3. Collaborate with the medical director to set performance expectations.
  4. Encourage and support continuing education to improve ER medicine quality.
  5. Develop a mentorship program with the medical director.
  6. Create scheduled clinical pairings with experienced ER doctors.
  7. Schedule case reviews and mortality & morbidity rounds.
  8. Mentor veterinary students during externship rotations.
  9. This role involves primary case duty, paired with a mentee to assist in case management.
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ALL DVMs:
  1. Build relationships with colleagues, clients, and support staff for a compassionate, collaborative environment.
  2. Foster a learning environment for colleagues, staff, and veterinary students.
  3. Triage and develop treatment plans for emergency patients.
  4. Provide ongoing care for hospitalized specialty patients during overnight and weekend shifts.
  5. Maintain complete and accurate medical records.
  6. Communicate clearly with clients and support staff.
  7. Coordinate with referral partners through verbal communication and referral letters.
  8. Participate in morning rounds with specialists.
  9. Support a positive, supportive work culture.
