Overview

The Be A Mentor Program pairs caring adult volunteers from the community with youth in one-to-one relationships. Mentors give of their time to be a friend, answer questions, and provide guidance. Mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and occupations and volunteer their personal time to be a caring friend to a youth. They serve as a role model, advocate, and resource. The purpose of the mentoring relationship is to help youth develop their full potential, both in and outside of the classroom.

Responsibilities

• Be a mentor in an IN PERSON mentoring relationship, matched with a youth near Hayward, Oakland, Richmond, or other nearby areas.
• Spend at least 1 hour a week with the mentee. Activities can include homework help, outdoor play, museum visits, crafts, and other suitable activities.
• Provide support and advocacy for youth in multiple capacities, acting as a friend, guide, and resource.
• Answer questions, offer guidance, and help youth develop their full potential inside and outside of the classroom.
• Encourage positive changes to reduce risk factors affecting youth, including staying in school and avoiding drug use.
