The MHW assists licensed nurses in providing patient care in the mental healthcare setting. He/she communicates with the Administrator, Manager, Charge RN, and co-workers about changes in the patient’s clinical condition, including vital signs, behavioral, and physical symptoms. The BHU MHW responds quickly to changes in patient’s status and performs basic nursing functions under the direction of the Charge nurse.

Responsibilities
- Ensure all Patient Rights are followed and adhered to.
- Participate in providing cost-effective, quality, and efficient patient care under the direction of licensed nursing personnel.
- Demonstrate leadership skills in de-escalation, seclusion, or restraint episodes following hospital policies and procedures.
- Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, intake, and output accurately, reporting findings to nursing staff. Alert RN to significant changes in patient condition.
- Complete admission tasks, including cataloging patient belongings and assisting with new patient orientation, following hospital policies for safeguarding valuables.
- Recognize and assist patients with ADL needs, considering age and physical condition.
- Assist the RN in identifying patients at risk for falls and follow fall precaution policies.
- Provide care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, addressing psychosocial, age-specific, and physical needs.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of mental health disorders.
Qualifications
Required
- Ability to perform routine patient-care activities; physical ability to assist with ambulation, turning, and transferring.
- Good communication skills; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations.
- Understanding and use of medical terminology.
- Current BLS/CPR certification.
- FIRE Card obtained within 60 days of employment.
- Initial MABPRO MAB or current MABPRO certification by completion of orientation.
- Advanced MABPRO certification by completion of orientation.
Preferred
- Six months of experience as a Mental Health Worker, CNA, PCT, Medical Assistant, EMT, or Paramedic preferred.
- Minimum of six months adult Behavioral Health or related direct patient care experience within the last two years preferred.
