Job summary

Stars Behavioral Health Group in Sylmar, CA seeks a Recovery Counselor to provide direct care for adults with mental health needs in a 16‑bed crisis residential setting. You will help with daily living activities, maintain a safe therapeutic environment, and support staff in delivering high‑quality care.

The position offers an evening shift Tue–Sat 3:00 PM–11:30 PM, competitive pay of $20.00–$21.00 per hour, and a comprehensive benefits package including employer‑paid medical, dental, and vision

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent plus one year experience serving persons with mental disabilities, or 20 hours on‑the‑job training within one year.
• Nurse’s Assistant certification is preferred.
• Valid CA driver’s license; Class B preferred and clean driving record.
• SERV Safe Food Handler Certification within 90 days of employment.
• First Aid certification within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care meeting physical and psychosocial needs of clients.
• Ensure safety regulations are followed and facilities are clean.
• Assist with client laundry, household chores, and general tasks.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic milieu.
• Drive clients in company vehicle when added to approved driver list.
• Deliver high level customer service and support to clients, visitors, staff, and physicians.
• Model appropriate behaviors and monitor daily client activities.
• Screen visitors for contraband and inventory client property.
• Monitor surveillance equipment and control center access.
• Respond to fires and emergencies at the center.
• Maintain vigilance over milieu to support quality care and safety.
• Perform duties under supervision; some tasks may be done independently.

Education

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED, HiSET, etc.) plus one (1) year full‑time equivalent experience serving persons with mental disabilities, OR completion of a minimum of 20 hours of on‑the‑job training within one (1) year of employment, in addition to the annually required 20 hours of training.
• Certification as Nurse’s Assistant (preferred).
• Valid CA driver’s license and driving record meeting company driver eligibility policy. Valid California Class “B” driver’s license preferred.
• SERV Safe Food Handler Certification obtained within 90 days of employment.
• First Aid certification from a qualified agency (e.g., American Red Cross) obtained within 90 days of employment.

Job Overview

• Provide direct care meeting the physical and psychosocial needs of clients through direct and indirect physical and verbal interaction.
• Ensure all safety regulations are followed and facilities maintained safely and cleanly.
• Assist with client laundry, household cleaning and other tasks as needed.
• Maintain facility in a clean, orderly, sanitary, and attractive condition.
• Added to the approved driver list and drive clients in the company vehicle as requested.
• Provide high level of customer service by maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment for all clients, visitors, staff, and physicians.
• Model appropriate behaviors for clients, monitor daily client activities.
• Screen incoming clients/visitors for contraband and inventory client property.
• Monitor surveillance equipment.
• Control access to the center, answer/direct incoming clients, conduct physical security checks of the center grounds.
• Respond to fires and/or emergencies at the center.
• Maintain vigilance over the general milieu within the facility to facilitate quality client care, optimum facility operations and preserve safety.
• Perform duties under direct supervision of the Program Director, or designee in most cases; some tasks may be accomplished independently.

Division/Program Overview

16‑bed facilities designed for adults with mental health challenges or a recent crisis who need intensive treatment. 24/7 programs as an alternative to urgent care or hospitalization. Individuals can live on‑site in a homelike setting for a short term while they receive counseling and learn basic living and interpersonal skills. Able to receive physical and psychological evaluation, mental health, and case management services, in addition to assistance locating permanent housing.
