Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

The Mental Health Therapist provides office-based mental health counseling services to individuals, couples, families, and/or groups experiencing emotional, behavioral, psychological, or interpersonal challenges. The therapist conducts comprehensive assessments, develops individualized treatment plans, delivers evidence-based therapeutic interventions, and supports clients in achieving their mental health and wellness goals.

This role is responsible for maintaining high clinical standards, ensuring timely documentation, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and fostering a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment for clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and diagnostic evaluations to identify client needs and treatment goals.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly review individualized treatment plans based on client-specific needs and clinical best practices.
  • Provide individual, family, couples, and/or group therapy sessions using evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
  • Monitor client progress and modify treatment interventions as appropriate.
  • Complete clinical documentation, progress notes, assessments, treatment plans, and discharge summaries within established timelines.
  • Maintain client records in accordance with organizational, regulatory, ethical, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Provide crisis intervention and risk assessments when necessary, including evaluation of potential harm to self or others.
  • Coordinate care with psychiatrists, primary care providers, schools, community agencies, and other treatment professionals as appropriate.
  • Participate in clinical case consultations, supervision sessions, and team meetings.
  • Educate clients and families regarding mental health conditions, treatment options, coping strategies, and available community resources.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable state licensing requirements, professional ethical standards, and organizational policies.
  • Participate in ongoing training, professional development, and continuing education activities.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative workplace culture focused on client-centered care.
  • Offer in-person and telehealth counseling services, as needed.
Job Requirements/Qualifications
Education
  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or a closely related behavioral health field required.
Licensure

For NM, one of the following active state licenses is preferred:

  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
  • Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC)
  • Other equivalent behavioral health licensure as recognized by the state

For MO, one of the following active state licenses is preferred:

  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Experience
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of experience providing behavioral health or counseling services preferred.
  • Experience conducting mental health assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic interventions.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and varying levels of mental health needs preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, including CBT, DBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Trauma-Informed Care.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport and maintain therapeutic relationships with clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage a caseload while maintaining documentation accuracy and timeliness.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, confidentiality requirements, and professional ethical standards.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated empathy, professionalism, and cultural competence.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily office-based clinical environment.
  • Combination of in-person and virtual (telehealth) client services.
  • Standard business hours with occasional evening appointments based on client needs.
  • May require crisis response or urgent client support during business hours.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while conducting therapy sessions and completing documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through virtual platforms.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment.
