Must be able to attend the New Hire Orientation for two weeks, M - F, 8am - 4:30pm

The Mental Health Technician functions as an active part of the treatment team, providing continuous patient care, supervision, interaction, and de-escalation support, and role modeling to patients ranging in age depending on which unit worked.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists patients with activities of daily living; interacts with patients, attends to patient needs and helps in crisis intervention, as needed.
  • Transports patients to and from appointments, clinics, laboratories, and/or treatments, as and when appropriate. Remain with residents when they attend off-site appointments or emergency room medical services.
  • Facilitate and transport residents for community outings and meetings.
  • Ensure safe practices for medication observation and administration for patients within our residential programs. Assure safe rights for medication observation and administration for the residents including the six rights of medication safety.
  • Facilitates on-the-job training for new and existing MHT team members.
  • Assist in providing therapeutic patient care, leading groups and one-to-one settings. Support cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and exposure response prevention (ERP) therapies throughout shift.
  • Responds to emergency and/or crises situations and supports visitor safety.
  • Actively observes/monitors and records patient behavior and activities including but not limited to meals and monitoring food intake. Complete documentation related to the residents and daily treatment progress notes as required within the medical record.
  • Ensure safety and accurate location of patients at all times, including responsibility for milieu management.
  • Monitors safety of patients, visitors, and environment, including infection control standards. Complete daily environmental rounds for safety, sanitation, codes, door lock and alarms.
  • Safely check residents into unit at admission or return from an off-ground pass or activity.
  • Reports any changes in patient condition or safety to the treatment team.
  • Orients and educates patients upon admission. Complete admission and discharge process with residents including belonging searches and required documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to:
  • Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols, and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning, and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.

Education/Training Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Be eighteen (18) years of age for all units. For Adolescent Units, must be at least 18 years old and at least 2 years older than the oldest resident.
  • Must possess a current active driver's license and be in good standing.
  • Float coverage support to residential and inpatient levels of care.

Formal training will be provided for the following:

  • American Heart Association CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) within 60 days of hire.
  • Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF) trainings within 90 days of hire.
  • Supervised Traineeship Program – 160-hour requirement.
  • Medication Administration Certification – within 90 days of hire
