Job Details

This position is part time (20 hours per week)

Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 5pm-10pm

With a commitment to patient and family-centered care, the Mental Health Technician assists in delivering care, observing patient behaviors, and supporting various aspects of patient care. The technician works closely with the RN and reports any changes in patient mood or behavior promptly.

Job Description
Essential Functions
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and staff in line with Jefferson's values.
  • Recognize patients and their families or care partners, providing safe, compassionate, and coordinated care respecting their personal preferences, needs, and cultural values.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, and other stakeholders via written, verbal, and telephone interactions.
  • Use therapeutic communication skills and offer emotional support to patients.
  • Apply verbal de-escalation techniques and follow protocols for managing patient behaviors.
  • Ensure patient safety through observation and routine rounding.
  • Lead or assist with group activities and unit events.
  • Assist RN with patient care activities following protocols and competencies.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment.
  • Assist with activities such as personal care, ambulation, and feeding, encouraging independence where possible.
  • Provide direct observation for patient safety as needed.
  • Complete documentation accurately and timely per hospital policies.
  • Participate in meetings and work groups; may assist in onboarding new staff.
Competencies

Knowledge of behavioral management techniques, healthcare principles, health information documentation, and patient safety practices.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of healthcare experience preferred; or a bachelor’s degree in humanities or social services plus 1 year in mental health or addiction care.

Certifications

BLS certification required; behavioral management training per campus policy.

Work Shift

Evening shift, Monday-Thursday, 5pm-10pm.
