Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Mental Health Technician (MHT) is responsible for observing and recording patient information pertinent to the treatment plan, welcoming new patients through specific admission protocols, assisting with the patient discharge process, maintaining direct patient observation, leading patient education, community, goal, and activity groups, assisting nursing staff by taking vital signs, and helping patients perform ADLs. Due to the high visibility and significant patient interaction, this position is frequently the first responder to a variety of patient situations such as codes, behavioral outbursts, attempts to introduce contraband, and medical issues. The MHT adjusts therapeutic approaches based on acuity, age, gender, and cultural considerations. This role does not assume independent responsibility for patient care. All duties are performed in accordance with Voyages Behavioral Health policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Qualifications

• Education and Training: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Certification as a nursing assistant (CNA) is preferred where required by state. Current BLS certification is required. Crisis management certification per hospital policy and standards is required.
• Experience: None required; however, 2-3 years of experience in an acute hospital, rehabilitation hospital, or skilled nursing unit is preferred.
