Job description

Job Title: Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary

The Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary provides therapeutic services to psychiatric patients under Trauma-Informed Care principles, following the directions of the Registered Nurse and the established treatment plan. Working under general supervision for routine situations, this role serves psychiatric patients across the lifespan through various treatment programs, such as educational groups and 1:1 interactions.

Responsibilities:
  1. Observe and report changes in patient symptoms and behaviors to the Registered Nurse to facilitate necessary adjustments to the care plan.
  2. Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and families to involve them in the care process, including facilitating patient educational groups.
  3. Perform safety checks and environmental rounds, document procedures, and update the Registered Nurse on patient progress.
  4. Check supply stocks to meet patient and nursing needs within budgetary constraints and departmental goals.
  5. Support patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse, including measuring vital signs and blood glucose, preparing EKGs, transporting patients, and assisting with ambulation and elimination needs.
  6. Respond to verbal and nonverbal communication from psychiatric patients to meet their needs empathetically.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (Required). Successful completion of Nursing Assistant Certificate and/or an Associate’s Degree in a human service field (Preferred).
  • Experience: At least one year of experience in behavioral health or healthcare (Preferred).
  • Licensure/Certification: BLS (CPR) from American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider (Required). STARR de-escalation training within 30 days of hire (Required). Additional preferred certifications include Nursing Aide I with North Carolina Division of Facilities Services and NCPT Certification Level I-II.
