Position Summary

The Mental Health Technician (MHT) functions as an active part of the treatment team, providing continuous patient care, supervision, interaction and role modeling for patients ranging in age from adolescence through geriatrics. All MHTs work under the direction of a Registered Nurse and report any changes in a patient’s condition to a Registered Nurse. The MHT is responsible for safety of an assigned unit by conducting visual observations, collecting and recording vital signs and symptoms, reporting abnormalities, documenting findings promptly, and employing crisis techniques as needed. The MHT may assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living under RN oversight. The MHT should establish and maintain a professional therapeutic relationship with patients, model and teach appropriate social skills, facilitate daily groups as assigned, promote clinical programming adherence, and respond to emergency codes as requested or assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Provide continuous patient care and supervision as part of the treatment team.
  • Observe patients, collect and document vital signs and symptoms; report abnormalities promptly.
  • Maintain patient safety and adhere to crisis intervention techniques as needed.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living under registered nurse oversight.
  • Establish professional therapeutic relationships and support social skills development.
  • Facilitate daily groups and support clinical programming adherence.
  • Respond to emergency codes as requested or assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of related experience preferred; knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques and mental health signs/symptoms.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification required prior to clinical work and every 90 days.
  • Handle with Care and Verbal De-Escalation training must be completed during new hire orientation and annually.
  • Ability to identify and address special needs of adolescent, adult and geriatric patients; strong teamwork and communication skills; ability to work with patients at all levels of functional ability and from diverse backgrounds.
