For 30 years, LEAP has worked with children, teenagers, and young adults in New Haven, Connecticut in some of the lowest income urban neighborhoods in America. As the largest youth agency in our city, we provide academic support, social enrichment, and leadership development, but we do so in a unique way. We give older students (ages 16-24) the training, education, and resources they need to work as counselors and Leaders-in-Training to our younger students (ages 7-15). In doing so, we go beyond impacting individual lives through education and employment. We build a community with power and purpose.

General Purpose:

The Mental Health Support Providers will provide a range of mental health support to LEAP youth and counselors to address mental health needs of children and teens.

Distinguishing characteristics, features, requirements:

This is a part-time, at will, 20-30 hour per week position that corresponds to the timing of LEAP’s summer programs (Approximately June 22nd through August 8th, 2025) including pre-program training and post-program debriefing periods.

The Mental Health Support Providers are supervised by LEAP’s Clinical Coordinator.

Important and essential duties:

  • Facilitates engaging social emotional learning curriculum for youth ages 7-15
  • Provides routine crisis consultation
  • Provides behavioral/emotional support to children and counselors while on site
  • Prepares weekly documentation and correspondences to the Clinical Coordinator
  • Participates in all mandatory LEAP summer trainings/debrief meetings and other trainings and debrief meetings as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Connecticut Licensed Social Worker or Counselor, LPC/ LSW/MSW/LMSW
  • 3+ Years of professional experience in child/adolescent mental health
  • Evidence of strong partnership building skills and presence in the community
  • Ability to work within a team structure; excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communications skills; organizational talent as a multi-tasker
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of and experience with complex behavioral health issues, family dynamics and child development
  • Knowledge of and experience with relevant potential supporting agencies in and around New Haven and Connecticut as well as appropriate policies and procedures to engage effective partnerships with such agencies
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience with the social, cultural, economic, psychological and legal issues influencing the attitudes and behaviors of LEAP clients and their families

Education and training:

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field is required.

Special requirements:

  • This position is in person (not hybrid or remote) and will entail work both at LEAP offices in New Haven, CT as well as in LEAP program spaces in New Haven Public School buildings.
  • This position requires that the person be able to drive and have access to their own vehicle to arrive at LEAP sites.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Compensation:

  • This position pays between $25 and $32 an hour based on experience, education and licensure with an average of 20-30 hours per week over the course of 7 weeks.
  • $32/hour- LPC/LMSW
  • $25-$30 hour- MSW/ LSW
