Position Summary

The Mental Health Specialist is a member of the multidisciplinary psychiatric patient treatment team. The MHS implements clinical care responsibilities in accordance with inpatient psychiatry department policies, procedures, and standards under the supervision of a psychiatric registered nurse.

The Mental Health Specialist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients from ages 18 and above. The Mental Health Specialist must possess the knowledge and ability to gather data reflective of the patient’s age and developmental level in determining treatment needs.

Schedule: Per Diem

Essential Responsibilities / Duties:

  1. Attend shift report, read all progress notes, test results, and other patient data to determine patient status.
  2. Review and implement treatment plan/behavior management plan to achieve patient goals.
  3. Read treatment plans and daily mental status assessments to ensure consistent and accurate care.
  4. Meet with patient early in shift to review the schedule.
  5. Discuss with patients about mental status, behavior, and progress towards treatment and discharge goals.
  6. Report pertinent information to charge RN, such as safety level, behavior changes, agitation, physical complaints, vital signs, and activity of daily living status.
  7. Share observations with social workers, colleagues, and family/caregivers.
  8. Document patient activities, behavior, and mental status each shift.
  9. Conduct individual contacts with patients to review needs.
  10. Identify teaching needs and report to RN.
  11. Identify issues related to discharge progress or barriers.
  12. Encourage participation in therapeutic programs and individual behavior plans.
  13. Provide education and support regarding milieu programming and therapeutic interventions.
  14. Participate in crisis intervention using verbal and physical de-escalation techniques.
  15. Conduct patient safety checks to monitor safety and acuity.
  16. Assist with patient admission procedures.
  17. Implement unit rules and evaluate patient progress.
  18. Provide peer feedback and orient new staff.
  19. Assist with physical care and hygiene as appropriate.
  20. Lead therapeutic groups and serve as a role model.
  21. Protect patient rights and participate in meetings.
  22. Complete mandatory education and develop educational plans.
  23. Respond to feedback and participate in quality assurance activities.
  24. Maintain a safe, clean, and respectful environment.
  25. Communicate professionally and manage conflicts effectively.
  26. Adhere to BMC’s values and standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or HS Diploma/GED with 2 years experience in mental health or related field, or Mental Health Specialist certificate.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
  • Preferably 1 year of direct patient care experience.
  • Skills in developing helpful relationships, using medical equipment, and providing age-appropriate care.
