Job summary

Commonwealth of Virginia’s Dept Behavioral Health & Developmental Services seeks a Special Management Technician for Central State Hospital in Petersburg, VA. The SMT will help maintain a safe, therapeutic environment in the Maximum Security Unity and provide therapeutic interventions as needed, engaging with patients and staff to promote recovery.

The role requires driving skills, strong communication, and the ability to deescalate situations using safety plans.

Qualifications

• The knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the job include basic knowledge of state laws, driving skills.
• The ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
• Use of good judgement, lift heavy objects, bend at waist and knees, walk or stand a minimum of 90% of the time on the shift, use upper extremities to hold, grasp and manipulate work materials, administer CPR, and to work overtime hours.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with patients, staff and visitors in a positive manner.
• Build rapports and therapeutic relationships with patients.
• Provide monitoring and assistance to activities to maintain a safe therapeutic environment.
• Engage in activities with patients to build rapports and professional relationships.
• Use safety plans to deescalate situations without the use of physical intervention.
• Use communication skills to avoid the use of restrictive measures.
• Promote positive behavior by serving as a role model.
• Make rounds throughout the unit to ensure a safe environment.
• Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor with patients.
• Respond to incidents and emergencies as directed by the on duty charge person.
• Make rounds and monitor patient activities.
• Ensure documentation is neat and legible.
• Complete all documentation and submit to the supervisor.
