Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school.

Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Rutgers The State University is seeking a Mental Health Clinician II in the New Brunswick Outpatient Services within Rutgers University Behavioral Healthcare.

The Mental Health Clinician II provides culturally competent outpatient mental health services that meet the needs of the designated adult population. Participates in the assessment of clinical needs and provides skill acquisition and symptom management using evidence based individual, group, and family therapy for mental health and co-occurring chemical abuse/dependency. Assists in the provision of clinical supervision and coordination facilitates clinical team meetings, assist with Performance Improvement Projects, and sits on UBHC committees.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Assesses treatment needs and provides evidence supported individual, group, and family treatment that is consistent with the service design and philosophy of the program, as clinically indicated, to assigned clients.

  • Provides assessments with empathy and concern for clients, as indicated by supervisory observation.

  • Arrives at accurate DSM-5 multi-axial diagnoses by the end of the evaluation session and updates when new information and clinical status warrant.

  • Demonstrates the ability to assess co-occurring substance abuse/dependence disorders and to formulate and implement appropriate outpatient interventions, as observed by supervisor.

  • Demonstrates ability to engage clients and families, assess mutual readiness for change, and motivate them toward common goals through the appropriate use of services as observed by supervisor in case presentation.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a Master's Degree in a mental health or related discipline plus two (2) years post Master's experience in the mental health field or Doctorate and a New Jersey license as required by discipline.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated competency in treating adults and families.

  • Ability to assess level of care needs and provide outpatient group therapy treatment.

  • Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.

Preferred Qualifications


  • LCADC preferred.

  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred.

  • Competency with electronic clinical documentation preferred.
