Meet the Primary School Teacher Known For Her Fun Teaching Style

Ahead of the 2024 school year, PS's The Educators is spotlighting 24 public school teachers around the country who are making a difference.

Monique Marquez Jackson is a dual math and English language arts and reading (ELAR) teacher at Travis Primary School in Sulphur Springs, TX. She uses TikTok to share her fun teaching style, which includes creating songs to help her students solve math problems and transforming her classroom into a coffee shop to teach financial literacy. Keep reading to get to know her.

What inspired you to be a teacher?
I was inspired to be a teacher thanks to my own positive experiences in my hometown of Eagle Pass, TX, with amazing teachers who made a difference in my life. Seeing the impact they had on their students and experiencing their passion for teaching motivated me to pursue a career where I could make a similar difference and build meaningful relationships with my students.

What's the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is building relationships and making a difference in my students' lives. There's nothing quite like seeing students grow and succeed, knowing that I played a part in their journey. The connections I form with my students and the positive impact I can have on their future are what truly make teaching fulfilling for me.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teacher was Mrs. Vicky Rodriguez, my second-grade teacher at Graves Elementary in Eagle Pass. She had an incredible ability to make every student feel valued and special. Her classroom was always a warm and welcoming place where we felt safe to explore, ask questions, and make mistakes. I remember she would reward us by allowing us to take our Cabbage Patch dolls on specific days! Mrs. Rodriguez's patience, kindness, and dedication to my growth left a lasting impression on me, and her enthusiasm for learning made every day exciting. She truly made a difference in my life by fostering a love for learning and building strong, supportive relationships with all her students.

What's your go-to teaching uniform?
A dress with a colorful pair of Jordans, a fun headband, and cute teacher earrings.

What do you always make time for because it makes you feel good?
I always make time for running, going on walks, and lifting. These activities help me stay healthy, clear my mind, and feel energized. They bring me a sense of accomplishment and well-being, making them an essential part of my routine.

How do you practice self-care?
I practice self-care by regularly getting massages, going shopping for things I enjoy, and treating myself to getting my nails done. These activities help me relax, unwind, and feel rejuvenated, which is important for maintaining my well-being.

Anything else at all you want to share?
I have a class pet who is a sulcata tortoise named Rafa. The students love him so much! He has been a valuable addition because he teaches them responsibility through care tasks, provides emotional support, offers learning opportunities about animals and habitats, and creates a relaxed, positive classroom environment.
