Job summary

Heritage Springs Memory Care is seeking a Medication Technician to support residents with medications, daily living activities, and health monitoring in a compassionate, resident-centered environment. You will work alongside the care team to ensure safety and quality of care.

Responsibilities include medication administration, documentation, ADL assistance, and participation in care conferences. CPR/First Aid certification and 18+ years of age are required; prior medication administration

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Prior medication administration experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications and related resident care per physician orders and care plans.
  • Follow the Five Rights and document in MAR/eMAR immediately after administration.
  • Maintain medication carts, rooms, inventories, and related records per policy.
  • Assist residents with ADLs, mobility, meals, and daily activities with a resident-centered approach.
  • Document accurately and timely; communicate with residents, families, and interdisciplinary team.
  • Comply with HIPAA, safety protocols, and emergency procedures.
  • May assist with orientation and training of new Medication Technicians.

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Medication Technician (Med Tech) plays a vital role in supporting the health, safety, and well-being of our residents. Working closely with the Resident Care Director and interdisciplinary care team, the Med Tech safely administers medications, monitors resident health, assists with activities of daily living, and provides compassionate, person-centered care. This position combines clinical responsibility with meaningful resident interaction, making it an ideal opportunity for individuals who are detail-oriented, dependable, and passionate about senior care.

Essential Functions/ Duties:

Essential duties may include, but are not limited to:

Medication Administration & Management
  • Administer medications, treatments, and related resident care services in accordance with physician orders, resident service plans, standing orders, and Company policy.
  • Adhere to the “Five Rights” of medication administration:
  • Right Resident
  • Right Medication
  • Right Dose
  • Right Route
  • Right Time
  • Accurately document medication administration immediately following administration in the Medication Administration Record (MAR) or electronic medication administration system (eMAR).
  • Document medication refusals, omissions, medication holds, adverse reactions, incidents, and non-routine medication administration appropriately.
  • Maintain medication carts, medication rooms, medication inventories, medication books, physician orders, narcotic counts, and related records in accordance with Company policy and applicable regulations.
  • Ensure proper storage, labeling, handling, security, and disposal of medications.
  • Monitor medication supplies and coordinate medication refills and pharmacy communications proactively.
  • Reconcile medication deliveries, discontinued medications, medication changes, and new admission medications.
  • Observe residents for medication effectiveness, side effects, adverse reactions, behavioral changes, or health concerns and immediately report findings to the appropriate supervisor, nurse, or healthcare provider.
  • Administer diabetic-related services, injections, and other delegated tasks as permitted by training, Company policy, and applicable regulations.
  • Utilize sound judgment regarding medication administration parameters and resident safety concerns.
  • Maintain strict compliance with controlled substance inventory and sign-out procedures.
Resident Care & Assistance
  • Provide assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, ambulation, transfers, continence care, dining assistance, and personal hygiene in accordance with resident support plans.
  • Provide compassionate emotional support, supervision, companionship, cueing, and redirection to residents.
  • Assist residents with mobility and transfers utilizing proper body mechanics and approved safety equipment and techniques.
  • Conduct routine resident rounds, wellness checks, and safety observations as required by policy or resident need.
  • Assist with resident transportation to dining rooms, activity areas, appointments, and community functions as assigned.
  • Assist with meal service, dining room setup, feeding assistance, hydration monitoring, and cleanup duties.
  • Assist with housekeeping, laundry services, room upkeep, and maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment as assigned.
  • Encourage resident independence while ensuring resident safety and dignity.
Documentation & Communication
  • Complete all required clinical, medication, incident, behavioral, and resident care documentation accurately and timely.
  • Maintain resident charts, physician orders, communication logs, care documentation, and related records in accordance with Company policy and applicable regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with residents, families, healthcare providers, pharmacies, supervisors, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Participate in shift reports, care conferences, communication meetings, and interdisciplinary discussions as assigned.
  • Promptly report resident condition changes, incidents, medication concerns, safety risks, and operational concerns to management.
  • Answer phones and respond professionally to resident, family, vendor, and healthcare provider inquiries as appropriate.
  • May assist with orientation, training, mentoring, competency support, and operational guidance for newly hired or developing Medication Technicians.
Compliance, Safety & Emergency Response
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and licensing requirements governing medication administration and resident care.
  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures, including universal precautions and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Comply with resident rights, abuse prevention, mandatory reporting, confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Respond appropriately during medical emergencies, behavioral emergencies, fire alarms, evacuations, elopement/wandering incidents, equipment failures, and disaster situations.
  • Report all accidents, injuries, medication errors, incidents, hazards, and unsafe conditions immediately according to Company policy.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness drills and safety training programs.
  • Attend all required in-person training, online education, competency evaluations, and continuing education programs.
  • May be requested to provide scheduling flexibility, shift coverage assistance, or temporary support at alternate Company locations based on operational needs, employee competency, and business necessity.
Other Duties:
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work:
  • Full-time, part-time, PRN, and variable shift positions may be available based on operational needs. Employees may be scheduled for day, evening, overnight, weekend, holiday, overtime, or rotating shifts as necessary to meet resident care and staffing needs.

  • Ability to provide compassionate, resident-centered care while maintaining resident dignity and privacy.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent. (Required)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Previous experience in a personal care home, assisted living, healthcare, or senior living environment (Preferred)
  • Prior medication administration experience (Preferred)
Work Authorization/ Clearances:
  • Criminal History Clearances
  • FBI fingerprint clearance (if required)
  • Pre-employment drug screening (if applicable)
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification (Required)
  • Medication Administration Certification or successful completion of state-approved medication administration training as required by the applicable state and licensing authority.
  • Current diabetic care or diabetic management training certification required where applicable.
  • Successful completion of all required medication administration observations, competencies, and ongoing education requirements.
Physical Requirements and Physical Demands:
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and assist residents throughout scheduled shifts.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and transfer up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to safely administer medications and complete required documentation.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and flexible schedules as needed.
