Summary:
Under the direction of the Charge Nurse and/or Director of Health Services, the Medical Technician is responsible for performing routine patient/resident care and medication pass according to policies, procedures, and acceptable nursing standards.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provides quality customer service efficiently to residents, families, co-workers, and vendors to ensure satisfaction.
  2. Communicates with residents' healthcare providers, supervisors, family members/significant others, and residents regarding health conditions and medication needs.
  3. Ensures medications administered match the prescriptions authorized by the prescriber (e.g., physician).
  4. Knows the basic rules and precautions of medication assistance, manages medications, and assists residents with self-administration.
  5. Follows infection control techniques during patient/resident care.
  6. Understands proper storage, security, and documentation of centrally stored medications.
  7. Follows procedures for medication ordering, refills, and receipt from the pharmacy.
  8. Logs all medications received on the community-approved medication log.
  9. Destroys medications as needed, following state and community procedures.
  10. Documents all communication with prescribers, family/significant others, and residents according to community policy.
  11. Observes residents continually for adverse reactions or signs indicating a change in medication needs.
  12. May assist the community with caregiver functions.
  13. Maintains all documentation required by federal, state regulations, and company policy.
  14. Adheres to high standards of cleanliness and all relevant policies, health codes, and guidelines in medication handling.
  15. Performs duties safely and efficiently, reports hazards and accidents, and wears safety equipment as required.
  16. Attends mandatory in-service meetings and complies with department and facility policies.

Education and Qualifications:

Essential:
* High School diploma or GED

Experience and Skills:

  • For unlicensed staff assisting with medication self-administration, 24 hours of training are required within the first four weeks, including 16 hours of shadowing and 8 hours of instruction before assisting.
  • Ongoing in-service training of 4 hours annually on medication-related issues.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Basic mathematical skills required.
  • Ability to understand, follow, support, and initiate facility policies and procedures, and respond appropriately to emergencies.
