Job summary

Great Lakes Management is seeking a medication assistant responsible for the safe administration of medications to residents in a long-term care setting. The role involves using MAR, documenting concerns, maintaining a clean medication cart, and staying compliant with state requirements.

Ideal candidates have at least six months in long-term care, strong communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team. Position requires flexibility, reliability, and English literacy.

Qualifications

  • Registration as a Trained Medication Assistant (TMA) preferred.
  • Minimum six month experience in long term care or assisted living residence.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must be able to prioritize, and organize work effectively and efficiently.
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to changing situations.
  • Must work as a team member with other personnel.
  • Must demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
  • Must be punctual, with good attendance record.
  • Must remain calm in difficult or unusual circumstances.
  • Able to read, write, spell, do basic math, speak and understand English.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications to residents using the MAR as a guide.
  • Prepare medication for each resident’s administration.
  • Ensure confidentiality of resident medication among others.
  • Document legibly all resident concerns during administration.
  • Complete resident treatments as outlined in the Treatment Administration Record.
  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of the medication cart.
  • Restock medication cart after passes are completed.
  • Be accountable for medication errors and report immediately.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and other required training.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job description

This position is responsible for the administration of medication in a safe organized manner. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, administration of medications and documentation of medication administration. The medication assistant completes required training, communicates with the case manager (nurse) and becomes knowledgeable in the state requirements for medication assistants.

  • Administer medications to residents using the Medication Administration Record (MAR) as a guide.
  • Prepare medication for each resident’s medication administration with the following:

  • Ensure confidentiality of resident medication among other residents, staff and families.
  • Document legibly all resident concerns made while administering the medication.
  • Complete resident treatments as outlined in the Treatment Administration Record.
  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of medication cart.
  • Restock medication cart with cups and spoons after all medication passes are completed.
  • Be accountable for medication errors and report immediately.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and other scheduled training sessions required by your supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The work environment consists of the entire facility including resident’s rooms.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to minimal.
  • Inside work while assisting residents.
  • Minimal exposure to Blood borne Pathogens, Infectious Diseases.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals.

Working Hours

The work schedule and hours may vary from week to week. The MA will be required to work weekends and holidays and may be required to work beyond the normal schedule.
