Job Summary:

St. Anthony Hospital has been redesignated in 2022 by Pathway to Excellence for demonstrating a commitment to a healthy workplace through professional development, shared decision making, leadership, safety, quality and well-being.

Our 4th floor has 32 beds to care for our medical patients, infectious diseases, pulmonary, GI, non-invasive treatments, and lots of other diagnoses. All rooms are private with their own restrooms, supply cabinets as well as couches and privacy curtains for the comfort of family who wish to stay close. We have two rooms fully plumbed to handle dialysis patients. Computers are also located in each patient room to facilitate bedside documentation and medication verification. We utilize Epic as our electronic health record.

The management structure of the unit consists of an experienced Clinical Manager and a Clinical Coordinator who work together to oversee the unit. The Charge Nurses provide additional clinical support for the staff and help to maintain the flow of the unit. The staff is composed of RNs and Care Assistants, with support services provided by Respiratory Care, 24-hour Pharmacists, PT/OT, IV Therapy RNs, Dieticians and RN Care Managers. RN assignments are determined by patient census and acuity, and our normal RN ratios are 1:5, with CNA support.

The Charge Nurse serves as a leader and clinical resource to staff under the direction of nursing leadership. Collaborates with the primary RN or team leader to ensure the planning and delivery of quality patient care in partnership with physician, interdisciplinary team and patient/family. Acts as a role model, demonstrating technical/clinical competence consistent with the needs of staff and the patient population served. Assists staff with problem solving and decision making.

Essential Duties:

1. Oversees clinical operations to include: coordination of assignments, delegation of tasks, provision of clinical care, patient placement, unit and patient flow.
2. Aligns staffing with productivity-based Staffing Matrix to include requesting resources based on patient need and flexing staff based on census and workload fluctuations.
3. Prepares assignments considering patient acuity and staff skill mix/competency; ensures timely posting of Staffing Plan; assigns and/or ensures staff are provided with rest and meal breaks.
4. Monitors and oversees Sitter usage in assigned area.
5. Serves as the first point of contact in the department chain of command during the shift for staff’s clinical needs, investigation of complaints, service recovery and completion of incident reports; ensures management is apprised of concerns and incidents.
6. Coordinates care, collaborating and communicating effectively with the interdisciplinary team.
7. Maintains and applies knowledge of quality and SafetyFirst-related initiatives and requirements.
8. Serves as mentor to develop and coach orientees and experienced staff; demonstrates skill in conflict management.
9. Contributes to the development and evaluation of staff competency; provides objective feedback to assist with staff performance throughout the review cycle.
10. Assists with monitoring of regulatory and auditing requirements.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

1. Two years of experience in the clinical specialty within the last three years preferred.
2. Prefer previous charge nurse experience.
3. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Washington State Board of Nursing.
4. Current American Heart Association Healthcare BLS Certification.
5. Specialty certification preferred.
