Primary Purpose

Responsible for basic specimen processing and testing to assist physicians in the diagnosis of patients.

Minimum Specifications
Education

- Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience

- None

Equivalent Education and/or Experience
Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Must be certified by one of the following or certification eligible with certification obtained within 6 months of hire:

  • Medical Technologist (MT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) - National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA)
  • Medical Technologist (MT) - American Medical Technologist (AMT)
  • Technologist, Blood Banking (BB) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Chemistry (C) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Hematology (H) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Microbiology (M) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Molecular Biology (MB) - ASCP
Required Tests for Placement
Skills or Special Abilities
  • Must be able to follow all laboratory procedures.
  • Must demonstrate a working knowledge of laboratory techniques.
  • Must operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment effectively.
  • Identify and address problems affecting test results.
  • Maintain accurate records, follow instructions, and communicate effectively with hospital personnel and medical staff.
  • Use laboratory and hospital computer systems appropriately within three months of employment.
Responsibilities
  1. Receive specimens, assess integrity, verify labeling and documentation, and data entry for billing.
  2. Perform specimen processing, reagent preparation, testing, and report results.
  3. Conduct quality control tasks, maintain documentation, and troubleshoot equipment.
  4. Assist in training new employees, residents, students, and physicians.
  5. Participate in the Pathology Quality Assurance program.
  6. Suggest process improvements and participate in special projects.
  7. Stay updated on developments in Pathology through seminars, journals, and publications.
  8. Adhere to applicable rules, regulations, and policies, and report unethical or fraudulent behavior.
