Job description

Medical Technologist - Shift (Casual/PRN) (Finance)

Nemours is seeking a Casual/PRN Medical Technologist to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Wilmington, DE.

Schedule: Casual/PRN night shift with every other weekend requirement

Duties include: Performing analytical procedures using manual and automated methods across various clinical laboratory methodologies (e.g., manual/visual plate-reading, microscopy, analyzers, rapid tests). Supervision is not required for specimen processing, test performance, or reporting results, provided documented training has been completed. The technologist must perform calibration, quality control, statistical calculations, and other process controls, understanding concepts such as linearity, standard deviation, and control charts relevant to analytical testing.

Specific procedures performed depend on the assignment, for example: identifying bacteriological organisms in Microbiology or analyzing potassium in Chemistry.

Essential Functions:
  1. Deliver presentations or educational talks to groups as assigned.
  2. Participate as a member of inspection teams, such as those for the College of American Pathologists.
  3. Order, access, monitor, and report test results on patient specimens, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness, and verifying critical information such as patient ID, lot numbers, and expiration dates.
  4. Use, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform maintenance on laboratory equipment following established procedures. Take responsibility for equipment performance, including interactions with technical representatives for preventive maintenance and repairs.
  5. If assigned, collect specimens from patients, including blood draws and other specialized collections, following established procedures and infection control protocols.
  6. Transport specimens as required, adhering to proper procedures.
  7. Review and stay informed about technical and administrative procedures, updating knowledge at least every two years and discussing questions with supervisors as needed.
  8. Manage supplies and inventory, including recording lot numbers, storage conditions, and ensuring proper storage and retrieval of materials.
  9. Answer telephone calls, interacting professionally with physicians, staff, patients, inspectors, vendors, etc., demonstrating good customer service.
  10. Follow all safety policies, including chemical hygiene and infection control, using PPE appropriately and handling hazardous materials safely.
  11. Train others such as students, residents, or new employees as assigned.
Job Requirements:
  • B.S. in Medical Technology (or equivalent, e.g., HHS exam or meeting CLIA qualifications for moderate complexity testing).
  • Clinical laboratory skills such as pipetting, aliquoting, microscopy, etc.
