Job Description: Medical Laboratory Technologist

Primary Purpose

Responsible for basic specimen processing and testing to assist physicians in diagnosing patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None required.

Certification/Registration/Licensure: Must be certified by one of the following agencies or be eligible for certification with certification obtained within 6 months of hire:

  • Medical Technologist (MT) - ASCP
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - ASCP
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) - NCA
  • Medical Technologist (MT) - AMT
  • Technologist, Blood Banking (BB) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Chemistry (C) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Hematology (H) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Microbiology (M) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Molecular Biology (MB) - ASCP
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow all laboratory procedures accurately.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory techniques.
  • Proficiency in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to identify and address problems affecting test results.
  • Maintain accurate records, follow instructions, and communicate effectively with hospital staff.
  • Use laboratory and hospital computer systems effectively within three months of employment.
Responsibilities
  1. Receive specimens, assess integrity, verify labeling, and enter data for billing.
  2. Perform specimen processing, reagent preparation, testing, and reporting results.
  3. Conduct quality control tasks, maintain documentation, and troubleshoot equipment.
  4. Assist in training and consulting with new employees, students, physicians, and staff.
  5. Participate in the Pathology Quality Assurance program.
  6. Identify process improvements and enhance customer satisfaction; may lead special projects.
  7. Stay updated on developments in pathology by attending seminars, reading journals, and integrating new knowledge into practice.
  8. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation standards, reporting unethical behavior as needed.
