Job summary

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta seeks a Laboratory Scientist to perform a broad range of clinical tests. You will process orders and specimens, run tests, report results, and maintain quality controls while collaborating with care teams.

This role emphasizes independent judgment and ongoing professional development within a lean laboratory culture. BS in MLS or equivalent, with ASCP certification, is required.

Qualifications

• No minimum experience required.
• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or MLS from an accredited institution or equivalent CLIA-compliant education.
• ASCP or equivalent MLS/ Medical Laboratory Scientist certification.

Responsibilities

• Process orders and specimens; perform accurate testing procedures across all assigned testing areas.
• Report test results according to standard operating procedures.
• Operate instruments with QA checks and perform maintenance as required.
• Correlate results with patient age/condition and investigate deviations.
• Maintain quality control data and ensure accuracy and precision.
• Provide education and training for new personnel.
• Attend shift meetings and department town halls.

Provides quality clinical information by accurately performing laboratory tests and procedures. Works effectively with others to meet patient and care provider needs. Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a high complexity clinical laboratory

Education

• Bachelor's of Science degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory science (MLS) from an accredited institution; or U.S. military provided training as a MLS; or Bachelor's degree that meets the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489

Certification Summary

• American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist

Job Responsibilities

• Processes orders and specimens, performs accurate testing procedures across all assigned testing, and reports test results according to standard operating procedures.
• Demonstrates familiarity with and follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including those pertaining to safety and compliance.
• Exercises independent judgment and critical thinking in non-routine circumstances to solve problems.
• Operates instruments using established protocols and quality assurance checks and performs preventive and corrective maintenance on instruments.
• Correlates results with patient age and/or condition, recognizes deviation from expected results, and analyzes and corrects problems using standard operating procedures.
• Performs, records, and analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
• Maintains current professional skills and technical competency as defined by laboratory competency policy.
• Conducts education and training for new personnel.
• Attends and participates in shift meetings, staff meetings and laboratory town hall meetings.
• Actively promotes a lean culture by performing duties to promote an understanding and consistent use of lean principals and processes.
• Performs other duties as required by department.
