Job description

Job Summary

Medical technologist responsible for supporting high quality laboratory testing in a clinical laboratory. Duties include preparing specimens for testing, performing routine and specialized laboratory tests, executing quality control procedures, troubleshooting quality control errors and maintenance, diagnosing and resolving computer data problems, maintaining and performing preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments, communicating technical information to medical staff and laypersons, assisting in training laboratory personnel, participating in continuing education, and recognizing normal and abnormal values. Professional conduct should model standards of behavior in all interactions.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare specimens for testing
  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests
  • Conduct quality control procedures and troubleshoot related errors
  • Diagnose and resolve computer data problems
  • Maintain and perform preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments
  • Communicate technical information to medical staff and laypersons
  • Assist in training laboratory personnel in routine procedures
  • Participate in continuing education activities
  • Recognize and interpret normal and abnormal test values
  • Model standards of behavior in daily interactions
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related medical or scientific discipline
  • 0–1 year of experience
  • Certification Examination for Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP BOC) or be registered and obtain certification within one year of employment
  • Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, and climbing stairs; ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted; ability to perform fine manipulation and gross motor activities as required
  • Good vision (20/40 corrected), hearing acuity, color discrimination, depth perception, and peripheral vision
  • Ability to work in rotating shifts, overtime as needed, and in a latex safe and respirator use environment
Physical Requirements
  • Stand, sit, walk, and climb stairs continuously or infrequently as required
  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs unassisted; lift/lower objects up to 50 lbs from floor to 36 inches
  • Perform repetitive hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder motions
  • Maintain good tactile and fine motor sensory functions
  • Maintain adequate vision and hearing acuity
  • Handle stressful situations effectively
  • Perform gross and fine motor functions in confined or cramped spaces or from elevated positions as needed
