Job summary

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by processing and maintaining the stability of patient specimens and by performing the ordered laboratory tests.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Perform all testing that qualifies under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) definition of moderate complexity testing, as well as waived testing.

2. Follow the department procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

3. Adhere to the department quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

4. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and correct or immediately notify manager.

5. Follow the laboratory’s established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

6. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment, accessioning, verifying specimens and specimen requirements

2. Knowledge of medical terminology.

3. Knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules.

4. Skill in communicating in a professional manner, both verbally and in writing.

5. Skill in planning, organizing, and time management.

6. Skill in using a computer and a variety of software, including Electronic Health Records (EHR) software, Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.

7. Skill in managing multiple priorities and problem solving.

8. Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet established goals and objectives.

9. Ability to maintain high levels of professional and personal integrity.

10. Ability to convey professional demeanor and sound judgment in dealing with patients’ care, protection of patient privacy, and confidentiality.

11. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

12. Ability to act as a good representative of the company.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Laboratory Science or related science, which includes a one-year internship in an approved clinical laboratory required. American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification required. Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or Medical Lab Technician (MLT) certification required. A minimum of one (1) year of experience as a clinical, hospital, or referral laboratory setting, utilizing electronic Health Records (EHR) required. One (1) year of experience in phlebotomy preferred.
